    Cal State Bakersfield graduate Mike McCarthy, a right-handed pitcher in the Boston Red Sox organization, was promoted to Triple-A Pawtucket (R.I.) Friday and made his Triple-A debut Friday night vs. the Syracuse Chiefs.

    McCarthy, who was 9-4 with a 4.64 ERA with Double-A Portland (Maine), pitched 3-2/3 innings in relief of starter John Ely, allowing two hits, one walk, one earned run and had three strikeouts.

    McCarthy was a 14th-round draft pick by Boston in the 2011 First-Year Player Draft after an outstanding career for the Roadrunners in 2010 and 2011. He ranks among CSUB's single-season and career leaders in several categories.
