  1. Local report: Belaustegui homers to lift Taft

    Pierce Belaustegui hit a two-out, three-run homer run in the eighth inning to lead Taft College past the state's No. 6-ranked Merced 6-5 Tuesday in a Central Valley Conference baseball opener at Merced.

    Belaustegui's homer broke a 3-3 tie, scoring former Stockdale High player Matt Packer who had walked, and former Tehachapi High player Sean Arbaut, who had been hit by a pitch.

    Former Foothill player Forrest Smith had two RBIs for the Cougars (5-5).

    The teams meet again at 2 p.m. Thursday at Taft.
