MICHAEL McCARTHY: Routines can help players focus, be consistent

    By MICHAEL McCARTHY, Contributing columnist
    Saturday, Jul 05 2014 05:44 PM

From Wade Boggs' pre-game fried chicken meal to Nomar Garciaparra's pre-pitch batting glove routine, each player has a routine that helps get them focused and perform their best.

Over the years I have seen a lot of very unique pre-game routines. Specific meals, pre-game prayers, Tai Chi or unwashed underwear (usually during a streak). For most, these are seen as weird and overrated, but for that person those routines are the secret to their success.

Routines help get a player prepared physically, but even more importantly they become mentally prepared to perform at the highest level. Hitting a 95-mph fastball on the black or making a diving catch in the outfield gap takes a tremendous amount of focus.
