'Runners edged in opener by Gonzaga in second OT

BY STEPHEN LYNCH Special to The Californian

The Cal State Bakersfield women's soccer team was dominated statistically in its season opener on Friday night. But despite a lopsided final stat sheet the Roadrunners came agonizingly close to garnering a non conference draw with Gonzaga at the CSUB Main Soccer Field.

Instead, Cassie Geerdts scored a goal with 13 seconds left in the second overtime period to lift the Bulldogs to a 2-1 victory.

Gonzaga outshot CSUB 30-4 in improving to 3-0 all-time against the 'Runners. "We can't complain," CSUB first-year coach Gary Curneen said. "We absorbed an awful lot of pressure there, and they threw everything at us. ... It just became mental at the end...We came very, very close. I felt we grew tonight as a team but I still think this group...
