Local report: Jensen wins feature at Bakersfield Speedway

By THE BAKERSFIELD CALIFORNIAN

By improving one place in the finishing order from a week earlier, Lee Jensen landed himself in Victory Lane Saturday night at Bakersfield Speedway.

Jensen followed up a second place showing in last week's IMCA Sports Mod season opener with an impressive victory over a field of 21 other drivers.

Jensen led the final half of the 30-lap race, edging a hard-charging Kyle Griffith for the win.

Tina McGowan was third, followed by John Piker and Jason Nation.

Nick Spainhoward, winner of the series' first race of the year, finished eighth.

One of the fastest cars of the night, driven by Jared Schweitzer, was knocked into the wall while leading the B-main event. Schweitzer's Sports Mod received considerable damage from the wreck and had to be towed off the track.

Jensen, who took second place behind Ethan Dotson in the B-main to earn a sport in the Sports Mod feature race, was both lucky and good in the feature.

Dotson passed early leader Cory Elliott for the lead on lap six and was still out in front until a mechanical issue on lap 14 forced him to take his car to the infield.

That allowed Jensen to inherit the point position.

The veteran Bakersfield driver managed to stay out front the rest of the way despite several restarts and a late challenge from Griffith, who took third place in the season opener.

ECHL hockey

The Bakersfield Condors fell behind early and never recovered, losing 4-1 to the Las Vegas Wranglers.

Las Vegas scored just four minutes into the game and led 2-0 before Bakersfield's Nick MacNeil scored 1:23 into the second period.

But the Wranglers countered with another goal late in the period and added another midway through the third period to put the game out of reach.

CSUB softball

The Roadrunners earned a split in Day 3 of the Cal State Northridge Tournament, defeating Pacific 3-2 in nine innings in the opener before falling to the host Matadors 4-2 in Game 2.

Against UOP (11-17), Amy Ricciardi went 3 for 3, including an RBI-single in the eighth to tie the game at 2. Sydney Raeber drove home the winning run in the ninth with a sacrifice fly.

Amber Mills (1-3) went the distance, allowing just one earned run on five hits, walking three and striking out two for CSUB (9-24).

Briana Pontecorvo and pinch-hitter Mackenzie Zinger each had RBI-singles in the second game loss to CSUN (21-10).

CSUB water polo

No. 4 California defeated the Roadrunners 19-10 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play.

The teams played to a 4-4 tie after one. The Golden Bears (15-4, 2-1) opened the second quarter by scoring six goals on their first six possessions to break the game open.

Kristen Jensen recorded four assists and drew three ejections for CSUB (12-17, 0-3).

NBA D-League

Ike Diogu had 28 points and 11 rebounds, while Terrel Harris scored 17 to lead six players in double figures scoring in the Bakersfield Jam's 114-105 victory over the Reno Bighorns on Saturday at the Dignity Health Events Center.
