Eight minutes into the third period, everything was going Bakersfield's way.

Then the tide turned in a big way.

Idaho scored two quick power plays to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 lead and went on to a 4-2 win over the Condors before 5,076 on Saturday night at Rabobank Arena.

The turn started six minutes into the third when Condors forward Greg Miller was checked into the boards. Both teams took roughing penalties but it was clear the Condors were expecting a call on the Miller hit that never came.

Just under a minute later, defenseman Erik Burgdoerfer was called for holding as he chased a Steelhead into Bakersfield's zone. He then kicked at his stick and barked at the ref, earning an unsportsmanlike conduct call. Burgdoerfer was then handed a misconduct and game misconduct.

Charlie Dodero drew the Steelheads even with a power play goal at 8:25. The Steelheads rolled right into another power play and Justin Mercier scored at 9:18.

"Burgdoerfer was undisciplined there," Condors coach Troy Mann said. "He took the original penalty and then he mouthed off to the ref twice and that was the hockey game there.

"I thought the penalty kill was excellent up to that points (killing all five Idaho power plays) and usually when you get to that five-plus range it's going to bite you at some point there. They scored on two straight and that was the hockey game."

The real backbreaker came at 12:40 when Jason Bast scored to put the Steelheads up 3-1.

Chris Collins got a power-play goal for Bakersfield at 13:44 but David de Kastrozza sealed the Idaho win with a goal at 19:15.

The Condors (28-26-2-3) have now dropped four of their last five games. It is the first time they have had a stretch that rough since Nov. 8-16. The team had gone 24-10-2-2 between Nov. 27 and March 4.

"We lost our composure, our discipline," Mann said. "The penalty kill let us down again. We had a couple of opportunities to make clear and we didn't get it out."

Asked if it was frustration over calls and non-calls, Mann said it could have been.

"I just addressed that in the dressing room," he said. "We're spending way too much time and energy in the officiating. That's the coach's job to deal with the officiating. They need to play the game.

"I thought we've lacked composure in that area even going back to the Alaska Series (last weekend). That's got to change here moving forward."

Michael Neal opened the scoring with a power-play goal 15:38 into the game.

Rookie goaltender Kevin Kapalka, who was making his pro debut, stopped 26 for the win.

"I thought we were really good for 50 minutes of that hockey game. I thought it should have been more than a 1-nothing game but (Kapalka) played well."

Defenseman Jordan Heywood made his pro debut for the Condors and assisted on Collins' third-period goal.
