Condors start season with assistants, no captain
By The Bakersfield Californian
Condors coachMatt O'Dette won't be jumping the gun on naming a team captain this season.
Saying he learned from the mistake of naming Joe Loprieno captain at the start of last season, O'Dette is going to wait and see who emerges from what he says is a strong leadership group.
Instead any player wearing a 'C',' O'Dette said he'll rotate 'A's' for a while before he makes his decision. Serving as assistant captains tonight when the Condors open the season at the Cow Palace against the San Francisco Bulls will be Peter Boyd, Levi Nelson and Erik Burgdoerfer.
Matt O'Dette chats before season opener
“We have a lot of leaders on this team (and) it's just a decision we want to be sure on,” O'Dette said. “The short amount of time in training camp we don't is enough to nail that down. We've learned from the start of last year. We want to to pick the right guys for it.
“Obviously Boyder stepped up and did a great job for us the second half of last year and he's certainly someone who is definitely considered. But we learned from the start of last season and we want to make sure we make the right decision and the right guys go into those roles. We're going to play it by ear here the first week, maybe the first couple of weeks and mix around the A's and see who steps to the forefront.”
