Roman amphitheater turned into hockey venue
By The Bakersfield Californian
The NHL has its Winter Classic (or did as it appears a lockout which will last who knows how long is imminent) but the venues for those games pale in comparison to where former Condors coach Marty Raymond will be behind the bench on Friday and Sunday.
Raymond, in his second year as head coach of the Medvescak Bears (Zagreb, Croatia) will be coaching his team in a Roman amphitheater, known as the Paula Arena. Constructed in 27BC-68 AD, it is among the six largest surviving Roman Arenas in the world.
The games are part of ARENA ICE FEVER - Pula MMXII, featuring teams from the Austrian Hockey League (Erste Bank Liga). Formers Condors Adam Naglich and Liam Huculak are playing for Raymond as well as former Las Vegas goaltender Michael Ouzas.
What a treat for all involved, including former Condor Scott Freeman. Freeman, who played for the Condors last season, is now with the Olimpija Ljubljana team our of Slovenia on Sunday.
Medvescak opens against Vienna on Friday.
