Nick Zandes of the Bakersfield Roadrunner Track Club took first place for the second straight year in the AAU region 23 qualifier Decathlon in the 15-16 year old age bracket. Even more impressive, Nick was the overall point earner as he not only competed with athletes his age, but also against 17-18 olds even though he is only 16. The decathlon consists of 10 events over two days including Day One: 100 meters, Long Jump, Shot Put, High Jump, 400 Meters. Day Two: 110 Meter High Hurdles, Discus, Pole Vault, and Javelin the event ends with the grueling 1500 meters. A decathlete requires a combination of speed, strength, jumping ability, flexibility and endurance. Nick took 1st place with 5,222 points (2nd place scored 4,625 & 3rd place scored 4,430). His victory means that he is qualified to compete at the AAU National Junior Olympic competition being held in Des Moines, Iowa at the end of July. His goal is to win a national championship!
