Accomplishments
The Baker Boyz senior AA-class softball team, representing Central Bakersfield, went 5-0 to win a national tournament Feb. 8-10 in Polk County, Fla. The Baker Boyz defeated teams from Colorado, St. Louis and Maryland before beating Scrap Iron (Colo. ) 27-17 in the championship game. Wilcox was honored as the team MVP, and Mascarinas, Weichelt, Estrada, Holman and Freitas were all-tournament selections. Estrada won the home run derby.
The 25-0 Barcelona boys soccer team from AYSO Region 359 continues to steamroll its way through the youth soccer ranks. The team went 10-0 in the fall, 5-0 in a regional tournament, 5-0 in a the Kern County Area A tournament and 5-0 in the Section 10 (25 percent of California) tournament to earn a berth in the state tournament March 16 in Davis. In 30 years of Kern County AYSO, this is the first team to qualify for the state-level competition, Area 10 director Janet Fenton said.
