Basketball
Bakersfield National Junior Basketball (NJB) registration is open for the Fall/Winter Season. NJB is a non-profit basketball organization for boys and girls grades 3rd-8th. Bakersfield Heat Girls is offering basketball skill building classes for girls in grades 5-11. Classes will include: shooting, passing, dribbling, offensive and defensive footwork, balance and 1-on-1 techniques. Tuesdays, Thursdays, 6-7:30 p.m., between Aug. 14-Oct. 25 at Lakeside School, 14535 Old River Road. Girls can sign-up anytime. Selection for a travel team will be on Aug. 23. 19th annual Santa Maria Valley Men’s Amateur Championship, Saturday-Sunday; 36 holes stroke play with a scratch flight and two handicap flights. 33rd Bakersfield City Amateur tournament, Saturday-Sunday (July 28-29) at Sundale Country Club. Entry is $120 and includes two rounds of golf, a Saturday lunch, a tee prize and awards. Baseball
The Kern Krushers, representing Bakersfield Southwest Baseball in the PONY Bronco Division All-Star tournament, finished its season 13-3. The team won the West Zone North Region District and Section titles, and was the runner-up in the Regional before being eliminated Sunday at the Super Regionals in Whittier with a 4-3 loss to La Mirada in eight innings. The team: Jacob Stuteville, Zach Griffin, Easton McMurray, Sean Mullen, Ronnie Stapp, Ethan Van Horn, Matt Borda, Garrett Greenlee, Luke Fringer, Evan Van Fossen and Jack Tobias. Coaches: Brock McMurray, Sean Mullen and Troy Fringer.
Basketball
BUA Elite won the bronze medal game at the California State Games in San Diego. Karate
Mario Ikino, left, won the men’s black belt kata and the grand champion kata title, and Jason Hanby was second in the men’s black belt kata at the recent Battle of the Dojos tournament in Hanford. They represented Way of Japan Karate in Bakersfield.
Softball
Bustos Elite 2001 10U finished second Saturday in the 2012 NSA Western World Series in Las Vegas. The team: Reagan Hamilton, Hailey Adams, Te’La Beard, Erin Padilla, Baylee Garrett, Kamryn Leoffler, Madison Sa, Christina Gonzalez, Bethany Cobian, Shelbie Valencia, Shelby Buchanan. Coaches: Craig Hamilton, Dave Garrett, Jay Gonzalez.
Track and field
Impact Throwers Club had members qualify for AAU National Junior Olympics in Houston in shot put and discus. Coach Rod Chronister, Corbin Chronister, Daniel Viveros, Jessi Solis and Alicia Viveros. Solis also competed in USA Track and Field Area Qualifier and placed first in javelin and discus, and got third in shot put. Alicia Viveros participated in the California State Games and placed first in shot put and discus. Solis and Alicia Viveros will participate in the AAU Junior Olympics next week.
Water polo
The Bakersfield Water Polo Club had some solid performances at the Hale Water Polo Tournament in Southern California. The 10U mixed team placed ninth, the 12U boys placed third (both with 4-1 records), the 14U boys placed 10th and the 18U boys placed 25th (both with 3-2 records). These teams will now head to Northern California to play in the USA Water Polo 2012 Junior Olympics.
