    The Heat captured the Bakersfield NJB Division I championship Sunday with a 42-36 victory over the Nets, completing a 10-0 season. The team: Will Alexander, Alex Heer, Gavin Heer, Tony Hernandez, Ethan Martinez, Joseph Murphy, Grayson Reed, Nathan Roodzant and Ronnie Stapp. The team is coached by Ron Stapp and Cody Stapp.

    The Bulls won the NJB boys grade 3-4 championship Sunday. Team members wre Trent Poulson, Marco Rodriguez, Damari Davis, Stephon Brooks, Andrew Tobias, Will Dobrazanski, Grant Buckey, Nico Fanucchi and coaches Rodgriguez and Wesley.

    Justin Garcia of the Japan Martial Arts Academy of Bakersfield placed first Saturday in sparring and forms and earned Junior Brown Belt Grand Championh honors at the Golden Bobcat Cup Karate Tournament in Merced. He topped eight other competitors for grand champion honors.

    Freedom Middle School's 8th-grade boys basketbal team went 2-1 in the six-team Rio Bravo Greeley tournament Feb. 13-15, falling to the host school in the final. Freedom's players: Logan Gifford, Anthony Dominguez, Kolton Baker, Jessie Villa, Colin Rabanal, Krit Tahinwattana, Nick Smith, Joey Murphy, Joel Lopez, Garrett Nelson.

    Carlee Acevedo-Fuller of Bakersfield, 33, took first place in the 138-pound weight class and third at the Presidents Day Open qualifying competition Feb. 16 in San Francisco. Her combined total of weight lifted (349 pounds) qualified her for the USAW National Championships which will be held in Salt Lake City in July. At San Francisco, Acevedo-Fuller set personal bests in the snatch (161 pounds) and the clean and jerk (189 pounds). She is graduate of Highland High School and CSUB.

    Colby Evans, 17, of Bakersfield High, a forward who plays club soccer for the Central Californoa Aztecs, recently was one of 18 players named to the CalSouth Olympic Development Pro-plus team which will compete Feb. 28-March 2 in the Olympic Development program National Championships at Phoenix. Th SoCal team will open Feb. 28 against North Carolina.

    The Bakersfield Assault went 4-0 to win the President Extreme Diamond Baseball tournament in Simi Valley during Presidents Day Weekend.     American Cheer, the cheerleading program of American Kids Sports Center, won six national titles at Jamz Nationals in Las Vegas on Feb 22-23. The following teams won their respective divisions: Red, Ruby, Silver, Jade, Blue and Flyers. Glitter and Platinum squads took second. White took third, Diamond placed 5th and Steel placed seventh.
