Former Ridgeview High and Bakersfield College pitcher Phil Dumatrait announced his retirement from professional baseball Sunday following a five-year major league career.
Arm troubles plagued the left-hander through much of a 12-year career that started when he was a first-round draft choice of the Boston Red Sox in 2000 after a stellar career at BC.
Dumatrait, 30, was coming off his best season in the big leagues. He was 1-3 with a 3.92 ERA in 45 games for the Minnesota Twins last season.
But another injury to his arm required surgery during the offseason.
He made his major league debut in 2005 with the Cincinnati Reds. He pitched part of two seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates and then pitched in Korea in 2010 before signing with the Twins.
