BY BETTE ADDINGTON AND MIKE HEFLEY Contributing bowling columnist

Local bowlers and friends looking for a relaxing and fun event, be sure to check out the annual Team Life/Marge's Bowl-A-Thon tournament Jan. 19, at Regency Lanes starting at 1 p.m. This event is put on every year by former local association President and Hall of Famer John Burnite. Burnite puts this event on every year for a cause that is dear to his heart, Relay for Life. Cost to participate is just $15 per bowler. You can put a team of four together or be put on a team. You bowl three games and during that time you are eligible to win door prizes or the 50/50 drawing.

Come out and support this worthwhile cause to raise funds for cancer research. You need to check-in this Saturday by 12:30 if you want to participate. For further information, contact Burnite at (661) 831-9183.

ABT tourney comes to Bakersfield

The Amateur Bowlers Tour held a tournament at Regency Lanes on Saturday. This was the So. Cal. Valley chapter of ABT and this was only the second time they have brought this event to Bakersfield (the first time was way back and took place at Freddie's).

This is the second tournament club that has come to Bakersfield in the past couple of months also as the San Joaquin Bowling Club recently held a tournament at Regency. Because of Bakersfield's central location, these clubs are trying to see if our local bowlers will come out and support their events. ABT event coordinator Bill Cauble said he was happy with this past weekend's turnout and is looking forward to coming back again in the near future.

Although we have not gotten the official final results as of this time for Saturday's ABT event, we do know that Bakersfield's Norris Richards was the tournament champion.

High city team record for 2012-13 season?

Team 9/Last One's Bowling from Marge's Social Group league could quite possibly have the city high record for a five-person team as the team posted a 1,157 high game scratch as well as a 3,434 high series scratch on Dec. 27 at Regency Lanes. Team members who bowled this feat were Shannon Branch, Kenny Branch, Theresa Yorba, Mike Yorba and Carlie Medina III. Lenore Espinoza is also on the team.

2012 Glover Masters champion VanDaniker selected for Team USA

Team USA trials were recently conducted at Sunset Station in Las Vegas and Bakersfield was getting excited as Gabriella Mayfield was on the board for making the cut for the women's team. Unfortunately, Mayfield had a rough day of qualifying the final day that dropped her down and out of consideration for the top five to make the Team USA Women's team.

But excitement was back in the mix when the selections were made and this year's Glover champion, Eddie VanDaniker of Chatsworth, was selected based on his trial performance to be on the men's Team USA! Another Californian and also past Glover participant, Missy Parkin, of Fullerton, was also selected on the women's team.

Bowling Tech: Cold weather bowling

The effects of the cold winter chill may adversely affect your bowling game in many ways. First, everybody's equipment seems to hook a little less in the cold winter. Some speculation is that the oil is thicker, doesn't dissipate as fast because the lane beds are colder, the air on top of the oil is colder, and yes, the bowling ball you have stored in your garage or car is colder!

That's just the beginning. Now, the grip factor. Your hand is a little smaller as it is cold. Your bowling ball thumbhole and finger grips are colder, which means the whole thing is harder to hold on to. Now, to add insult to injury, it's so hard to hold onto the bowling ball that it's virtually impossible to hit your target accurately because you're squeezing so tight. That's where the frustration sets in, because everybody wants to bowl well.

So, it's time to adjust to the weather for both your grip and the lane conditions. Some bowlers change all of their grips during the winter time while some just adjust their thumb holes because that's where the release really starts.

As for your bowling equipment, at least try to take them inside the house because at least keeping the bowling ball at room temperature will help the traction factor and hook. Keeping everything at room temperature and keeping your hands warm will definitely improve the winter bowling blues.

Does your axis point vary from the norm because of a looser harder-to-hold grip? To be answered in a future column.
