Most people celebrate Thanksgiving with a turkey dinner with family and friends. Some spend the weekend looking for bargains on Black Friday. Youth hockey players do what they love the most: play hockey.

Every year the Bakersfield Dragons teams travel to various destinations to take part in hockey tournaments over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. This year, the Bakersfield Dragons Squirts played in the Turkey Carver Classic Hockey Tournament in Simi Valley.

The Dragons Squirts were 1-2-1 in the tournament. They beat the hometown Mariners in a shootout in the consolation game Sunday. Over the course of four games, Matthew Perri scored four goals, while Landon Riley and Corbin Heitman each got one. Defenseman Cobi Lennex netted his first of the year during the tournament.

“It went off the goalie’s skate and it just went in,” the first-year Dragon said. Lennex is from Fresno, and his is family makes the drive to Bakersfield three times a week so he can practice and play with the Dragons.

“We didn’t have a team in Fresno,” Lennex explained. “So I wanted to come to Bakersfield to play. It’s fun!”

The Dragons resume their regular season play this weekend when they return to Simi Valley to take on the Mariners.
