Bakersfield’s Odalys Camacho, 16, captured the 114-pound gold medal in female boxing Friday an the National Junior Olympics in Mobile, Ala. Camacho defeated Kristy Rodriguez from Naperville, N.J., 3-0 in the final bout, forcing her into a standing eight-count in the third and final round. Camacho is set to compete next week in a National Golden Gloves tournament in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
The Bakersfield Southwest 13U All-Star baseball team captured the PONY SoCal North Region Section championship with a perfect 4-0 weekend in Palmdale. Bakersfield defeated Wm. S. Hart (Santa Clarita) and host Palmdale twice before posting a 9-3 victory over top-seeded Camarillo in the title game. The team advances to the Super Regionals to be played in Fullerton and Whittier starting next week. The team: head coach Brock McMurray, assistant coaches Sean Mullen and Ray Blackburn, and players Cory Blackburn, Carson Bryant, Luke Fringer, Zach Griffin, Jared Lubatti, Andre Martinez, Easton McMurray, Sean Mullen, Jalen Smith, Ronnie Stapp and Jack Tobias.
The Yard Dogs baseball team went 4-0 to become the 8U Champions in the Central Cal Grizzlies Showcase, June 22-23. The Players: Joseph Gabaldon, Luke Shaw, Brock Thompson, Seth Plemmons, Shawn Petty, Andrew Dickey, Isaac Boschini, Kale Gillenwater, Jacob Porter, Toby Twist, Logan Gatlin. The coaches: Allen Thompson, Keith Plemmons, Darrin Dickey, Rick Gillenwater and David Shaw. Earlier in the month, the Yard Dogs won the 8U championship at the Battle at the Beach.
The 8U KC Eagles baseball team went 5-0 to win the championship at the Gamebreaker Sports 2013 Summer Classic this weekend in Moorpark. The team: Joe Mata, Hector Romero, Jacob Gutierrez, Anthony Hargis, Nico DeHaro, Luis Fuentes, Jaycob Villalpando, Hector Munis, Adam Alvarez, Brad Perez and Eric Macias.
Three students from the Japan Martial Arts Academy of Bakersfield had strong showings Saturday at the Ventura County Traditional Karate Championships in Oxnard. Sam Cole finished first in Weapons Kata (forms), Kata and Kumite (sparring), Justine Garcia was third in Weapons Kata, second in Kata and second in Kumite; Christion Alsina was fourth in Weapons Kata.
Track and field
The dynamic brother-sister duo of Daniel and Alicia Viveros each had strong showings at the West Coast Junior Olympics in Reno. Alicia set a meet record in the Youth Girls discus and also won Youth Girls shot put. Daniel won the Youth Boys discus and was second in the Youth Boys shot put. They both qualified for the National Junior Olympics in Detroit, July 29-Aug. 3.
