Local report: CSUB nets triple crown of awards for WAC baseball

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas -- Cal State Bakersfield nearly swept the Western Athletic Conference awards Tuesday.

CSUB junior infielder Tyler Shryock was named the player of the year, Roadrunner senior Jeff McKenzie earned pitcher of the year honors and Bill Kernen was named coach of the year.

Shryock, a junior from Tehachapi, batted .362 in conference play and led the WAC with 42 hits.

McKenzie, a senior from El Dorado Hills, made nine starts during conference play, registering a 1.97 ERA. He recorded an 8-1 record during conference play with 56 strikeouts. He also completed three of his WAC games.

Kernen, in his fifth season in charge of the 'Runners, led CSUB to a share of this year's regular season title.

Shryock and McKenzie were also named all-WAC first team along with junior infielder Oscar Sanay, junior catcher Cael Brockmeyer and senior pitcher Scott Brattvet.

Freshman third baseman Mylz Jones was a second-team selection.

Blaze wins 5th straight

The Bakersfield Blaze took control with a five-run seventh and then survived a rally from the High Desert Mavericks to win its fifth straight, 12-10, at Sam Lynn Ballpark.

Ryan Wright hit two home runs, including a two-run blast as part of the big seventh that gave Bakersfield a 12-7 lead. Wright also homered and had two doubles Monday.

Kyle Waldrop had a two-run home run in the third that gave the Blaze a 5-2 lead.

Marquez Smith was 3-for-5 with two RBIs for Bakersfield, which had 15 hits, eight for extra bases.

Wright, Steve Selsky, Waldrop, Juan Silverio and Dominic D'Anna each had two hits apiece for the Blaze, which has an off day today before hosting Stockton for a 4-game series starting Thursday.

Nick Klassen shot a 3-under-par 69 to win the Sharyn Woods Flight, and Wes Gleason shot an even-par 72 to win the Maryann Walz flight, and they collected $2000 apiece Monday at the Links to Life Pro-Am golf tournament at Seven Oaks Country Club.

Justin Pitts, Bob May and Steven Hale each shot a 70 and won $1,500 apiece in the Carol Barraza Flight.
