Nick Zandes of the Bakersfield Roadrunner Track Club took first place in the Decathalon amongst the intermediate boys competing in the AAU Region 23 National Junior Olympic Qualifier held in Tulare, CA over the weekend. Its impressive because Nick is a "first year" intermediate boy. The Decathalon cannot be domminated by size, strength, or speed. It requires a combination of all those qualities. Nick took first place in the Decathalon with 4,218 points (2nd place scored 3,543 & 3rd place scored 3,262). His victory means that he is now qualified to compete at the AAU National Junior Olympic competition being held in Detroit, MI at the end of July. His goal is to place in the top 8 at the national competition in order to earn a medal, and spot on the podium in Detroit next month.
