Local bowler, Carlie Medina III, showed why he was selected the 2012-2013 Golden Empire United States Bowling Congress Bowler of the Year when he traveled to San Jose on Labor Day weekend to compete in the inaugural Tony Reyes Memorial PBA Member/Non-Member Doubles tournament held at Fourth Street Bowl.
Medina teamed with PBA member, Marty Deh, of San Jose. Although they struggled after the first game, Medina said they, "never lost confidence in each other" and went on to win this event which drew 58 doubles teams from around the western region. Other Bakersfield bowlers who competed were Zack Newman, Kiel Jordan and Damon LaBlue.
For his first PBA win, Medina and Deh split $4,000. Medina would also like to say "thanks to Nick Smith and the Brunswick staff" for their support.
Medina dedicated his win to his friend, the late Tony Reyes who he had the pleasure of bowling with and was on Reyes hand-picked team for bowling annually in the USBC Open Nationals. Their 2013 team (TR2) finished in 24th place in the Open Team event in the USBC Nationals in Reno. Reyes died on September 28, 2012 and his love for the sport of bowling lives on through those he continues to inspire.

Each team is also allowed two alternates which may also bowl on the first night as long as they are listed as an alternate on your team. Practice starts at 6:30 p.m. and competition begins at 6:40 p.m. For further information, contact either Regency Lanes at 325-6428 or Bowlers Edge/Mike Hefley at 324-6303.

Glover Masters House Spot Roll-Off
The first of two Glover House Spot Roll-Offs took place this past Saturday, September 7, at Regency Lanes. Six local bowlers came out to get a chance to not only bowl on the main event's pattern (Bourbon Street) but also try to win a FREE spot into the main event. The bowlers who participated in this House Spot were Joe "JP" Smith, Diz Francisco, Rick Bowman, Norris Richards, Aris Anadilla and Zack Newman.
Diz Francisco started out leading the pack winning the first two high game pots bowling a 236 and then a 241. Then JP Smith came on strong for the third game with a 232. The fourth game was a dual between both Francisco and Smith with Francisco beating Smith out by one pin for the high pot with a 257. But, silently and consistently Zack Newman was rolling strong 200 games up until the fifth game when he let loose with a nice 278 game which was the highest of the day. Newman soared to the top with this huge game and tied Francisco for the high game for the sixth and final game with a 244.
Newman won with a 1416/+216 and averaged 236 for a FREE entry into the 2013 Don Glover Masters Scratch tournament which will take place on the weekend of Oct. 5-6 at Regency Lanes.
