BY BETTE ADDIGNTON AND MIKE HEFLEY CONTRIBUTING BOWLING COLUMNISTS

A look at what is available in fall/winter leagues:

Regency Lanes

820 Real Road, (661) 325-6428, regencylanes@yahoo.com, or like them on Facebook

Regency Lanes is getting ready to kick off another big season of good, competitive bowling and it looks like a couple of big leagues for the higher-average players will be hitting the floors at Regency Lanes for the 2013-2014 season.

Returning again with two eight-week-rounds at each bowling center (AMF Southwest Lanes and Regency Lanes) will be the Scratch Trios league which still has openings for anyone interested in joining this type of league. If you average lower than 180, you are still welcome as this league has a cap and there are several teams looking for a lower-average bowler to fit. League starts on Mon., Sept. 9th at 6:30 p.m. If interested, please contact Diz Francisco at (661) 599-3097 or email him at scratchtrio@gmail.com

The Tuesday Men's league at Regency Lanes is set to start next week on September 3rd with a short meeting before bowling starts. This league features one of the highest prize funds in town with a $4000 first place, $3200 for second and $2800 for third place team payouts based on only 14 teams. It is based on bowler's handicap (90% of 230) with numerous rules including bonus points each night that encourage good, competitive bowling not sandbagging! Teams are four-man.

The Tuesday Ladies Handicap leagues also hits the floor at Regency Lanes starting September 10th and this is another very good handicap league for women bowlers in town and is the only all-women night league offered. Teams are comprised of four ladies.

The popular Thursday night Social Group league will be having their meeting this Thursday, August 29 at 5:30 p.m. in the meeting room at Regency. The league will start bowling on Thursday, September 5.

AMF Southwest Lanes

3610 Wible Road, (661) 834-2695, amf00608@amf.com, or www.southwestlanesca.amfcenters.com

Stockdale Men's league starts on Thursday, Sept. 5, at 6:30 p.m. and has teams comprised of five men. This league's meeting will be taking place this Thursday, August 29th at 6 p.m.

Another Thursday night league is the Lowenders, which also will start on September 5th at 6:30 p.m. is comprised of mixed teams of five (2/3). Their league meeting will take place on Sept. 5, 45 minutes to an hour prior to start of league.

The 2013-2014 Youth league will start on Saturday, September 14th and will be a Doubles league that now will start at 12 noon and is a 15-week league. Meeting on September 14th will start at 11:30 a.m.

Please note new hours for AMF Southwest Lanes will take effect September 1st.

Local Bowlers shine in annual MAMBO Tournament

Several local bowlers traveled to Las Vegas to compete in the 14th annual MAMBO (Mexican-American Bowling Organization) Open which took place the weekend of July 12-14 at South Point in Las Vegas.

The Mixed Doubles event was won by the husband and wife team of Barb and Diz Francisco, who both won $225 for their win. In the Mixed Team event, team Espinoza took both sixth and seventh place. Bowling on the Team Espinoza team that placed sixth were Arnold Espinoza, Lenore Espinoza, Tim Sanchez and Andy Sanchez. Each won $100. And the seventh place Team Espinoza consisted of Mike Yorba, Lenore Espinoza, Tim Sanchez and Damon Blanton who took home $93.75 each.

Glover Masters House Spot Roll-Offs Scheduled

In preparation for the upcoming 7th annual Don Glover Masters Scratch Tournament which will be taking place the weekend of Oct. 5-6 at Regency Lanes, there will be two House Spot Roll-Off tournaments prior to the main event to allow local bowlers interested in this event to have a chance to bowl on the tournament lane conditions.

The first House Spot will take place on Saturday, September 7, at 2 p.m. Cost is still $40 and it is open to adults and youth. Side pots (adults only) are optional and cost is $10 (sidepots & 3-game blocks). Bowlers will bowl six games across twelve lanes on the tournament lane pattern (Bourbon Street). Winner of the House Spot will get a FREE entry into the 2013 Glover Masters main event ($125 value). If you miss this House Spot, the second one will be on September 28th.

Weekly super scores

Aug. 13 was a special night for local bowler, Stephanie Sanders, who rolled her first 300 game, in the Mega Ball league at Regency Lanes. Was it a coincidence, but she bowled her perfecto on the exact same pair of lanes that she bowled her 288 game the first night of Mega Ball back in May? Sanders joins an elite number of only a few local women who have accomplished this feat--Yvonne Thomas, the late Dee Sargent, Tammy Sibley, Tracye Taylor-Hicks and Veronica Smith-Davis. (Irene Villalobos also bowled a 300 that was recognized locally but not nationally because it was rolled during a make-up game.)

Congratulations to Ron Erickson who bowled 11-in-a-row for a nice 298 game on Wednesday, August 21, bowling in the Oldies But Goodies league at AMF Southwest Lanes.
