Accomplishments
Andrew Ariey of Bakersfield won the "Rock to Pier" 10K run July 7 at Morro Bay in 30 minutes, 10 seconds, the best among more than 900 competitors and about a minute off the record set by former Taft High standout and 2008 U.S. Olympian Billy Nelson.

Track and field
The Kern County Athletic All-Stars youth track club had a strong showing at the USATF Region 14 (Northern and Central California) Championships with four regional champions and 14 top-three finishers. The Kern County Athletic All-Stars were lead by Malik Elizee, who won the 13-14 boys triple jump, placed second in the long jump, third in the 200 meter hurdles, and anchored the second-place 4x400 meter relay. Other regional champions for the All-stars included Marcel Avery (8U boys long jump), Ilan Katz (9-10 boys shotput) and the boys 11-12 4x400 meter relay team of Jose Colotl, Tony Hernandez, Adam Teasdale and Moises Medrano. The regional championships were the final tune-up before the National Junior Olympics in Houston.
