Hockey : Bakersfield Dragons Squirts Sink the Mariners’ Perfect Record
The Bakersfield Dragons beat the undefeated Ventura Mariners Sunday in Simi Valley. The final score was 3-2.
The Mariners struck first half-way through the first period, but maintained the lead only for one minute when Matthew Perri tied it up for the Dragons. The Mariners took the lead once again in the second, but Landon Riley got the equalizer early the third, again making it anyone’s game. The Dragons’ final tally came off the stick of Perri on a penalty shot. Perri was awarded the opportunity after a Mariners’ player slid his stick to stop Perri’s scoring chance in front of the Mariners’ net.
First-year Squirt Matt Mayo said this was an important win for his team. “We got off to a slow start but after we scored our first goal to tie it, we just got our heads in the game and we played well,” Mayo said. “It showed us we can accomplish anything.”
The Dragons Squirts play at home the next two Sundays at the San Joaquin Community Hospital Ice Center.
