The 2nd North of the River Amateur Championship will be contested this weekend at the Haggerty-North Kern golf course. So far, NK Director of Golf Jim Phillips isn't quite sure how many players will be competing.
"I only have 16 as of right now (Thursday afternoon)," said Phillips. "I am hoping that we get some last day and last minute entries. We always get a few late ones but I had hoped to have at least 30. Looks like if we get to 25 that will be pretty good."
The NOR Championship is the first leg of the Michelob Ultra/Sports Authority Player of the Year Series, and with only five events on the schedule for 2013, points will be at a premium. The winner receives 20, the runner-up 18 and so forth down to two points for a 10th place finish in Championship Flight play.
The defending champion is D.J. Fernando who blitzed the NK course last year with rounds of 65 and 68 for an 11-under 133 total. Ron Killmer, the 2012 Player of the Year, was the runner-up with a 140 total that also included a 68 in the final round.
Should any player equal or break one of the scoring records (first or second round or tournament), they will receive a two- point bonus for each record.
"The course is in good shape and it looks like it won't be that hot this weekend, so I am hoping to get a few more out there," added Phillips. "I would like to keep this tournament going but we need players to do that."
Anyone interested in playing (there will also be a handicapped flight) should call the NK pro shop at (661) 399-0347 as Phillips will take entries thru the end of the day today (Friday).
Shah eliminated in playoff for Cal Amateur match-play
Local amateur Manav Shah played well enough to make the 32-player match-play portion of the California State Amateur Championship on Monday and Tuesday. The only problem is it only got him into a seven-way playoff for the last of those 32 spots.
Shah was eliminated on the first hole with a bogey and Johnathan Garrick of Atherton went on to claim the last spot.
Shah posted rounds of 76-74 for a 150 total as both of the courses at the Monterey Peninsula CC played extremely tough. The medalist was Xander Schauffele from San Diego who managed just a 2-under 142 total.
Rich Gilkey, Bakersfield's other participant didn't fare too well as he shot consecutive 84s. The tournament concludes with the 36-hole championship match on Saturday.
This week the Kern County Junior Golf Association played its weekly event at the Foss-Kern River and Tyler Burns carded the best round of the summer so far with a 2-under 68 to win the Boys 16-17.
Warren Miller was the Boys 14-15 winner with a 72 and Dheer Patel won his third straight Boys 12-13 division event with an 81.
Hayden Hughes was the Boys 10-11 winner with a 49 and David Chuuon-Chan won his third straight Boys 9U with a fine 40.
For the girls, Amanda Wong and Lexi Keene each shot 83 to win the 14-17 flight and the Girls 13U winner was Madi Daniels with a 48.
Next week the KCJGA will be at RiverLakes Ranch on Tuesday.
Westerfeld, Seymour in SCGA Senior Amateur
Dave Westerfeld and Jim Seymour will be Bakersfield's hopes for a title in the 36th SCGA Senior Amateur Championship this Monday and Tuesday at the Virginia CC in Long Beach.
There are 80 players in the championship which is open to players age 55 and older. Seymour will tee off on the first hole at 8:30 and Westerfeld will start on the 10th at 9:30.
Patel ties for 21st on Web.com Tour
Bhavik Patel was tied for third entering the final round of the Wichita Open last Sunday, but a final round 1-over 73 dropped him into a tie for 21st and he earned $6,400. Patel is now 32nd on the money list.
This week, the Web.com Tour is playing in Raleigh, N.C., and Patel shot an opening 1-under 71 and sits equal 59th going into today's second round.
