Locals capture Ripken 10U title

By THE BAKERSFIELD CALIFORNIAN

Elijah Pascual threw across the diamond to first baseman Kris Anglin to clinch the Cal Ripken World Series title for the Northwest Bakersfield 10-and-under All-Stars on Friday night in Bentonville, Ark.

Mason Moccardini threw his third complete game of the tournament as Bakersfield defeated Willamette Valley, Ore., 10-5, completing a remarkable run for the all-star team that won regional titles together as 9- and 10-year olds. Bakersfield went 6-0 in the tournament. Moccardini earned tournament MVP.

"It was a great thrill," said Moccardini, who throws a fastball, changeup and curveball. "I was so excited. My teammates helped me a lot with defense."

"My philosophy today was to keep the ball down."

Bakersfield opened up a 7-0 lead after the first inning, and tacked on another run with a solo home run from Kobe Silva. Bakersfield set a tournament record with 11 home runs in their six games, passing the old mark of nine set by Glen Allen, Va., last season.

"It was a lot of hard work," said coach Brandon Silva. "Three years of work. It all paid off. All the boys worked their butts off to get to this point. They all hang out together. They are all like brothers. They absolutely enjoy playing for each other."

After Pascual fired to Anglin for the final out, the team celebrated near the third-base dugout.
