    Camps

    Basketball: Twice weeky. Beginners/intermediate, 5-6 p.m. Advanced, 6-7 p.m. Coach is Chris Clayton, formerly of East High, Texas A&M. Call (661) 410-3343. Starts Monday.

    Bowling: For children 14-and-under at Regency Bowling Center, 820 Real Road, (661) 325-6428, June 11-Aug. 10. Camp runs Monday-Friday, 1-2:30 p.m. Come learn how to bowl (coaching help available at no extra charge on Tuesdays and Thursdays). Participants bowl two games each day. Cost is $8 per child and includes shoe rental, hot dog and drink. No registration deadline -- participants come whenever they would like.

    Bowling: Summer Camp at AMF Southwest Lanes, 3610 Wible Road. Camp is through Bakersfield City Parks and Recreation District, (661) 326-3866 or bakersfieldparks.us. Two sessions, four Tuesdays in June (5, 12, 19, 26), or last four Tuesdays in July (10, 17, 24, 31). Runs from 1-2:30 p.m. Call Bakersfield City Parks and Recreation District to sign up and for cost. Registration deadline is prior to start of each session (June 5 or July 10). Cost is $60 per session (ball and shoes included). Camp will teach techniques of bowling and rules. Parents must be present at Camp. For ages 5-17.

    Former Ridgeview High and Bakersfield College pitcher Phil Dumatrait announced his retirement from professional baseball Sunday following a five-year major league career.

    Outdoors notes: Hunting licenses, big game drawing applications available

    Hunters can now purchase 2012-2013 hunting licenses and apply for the Big Game Drawing online, the Department of Fish and Game (DFG) announced. Transactions can be conducted at any DFG license sales office, license agent or online.

  4. Robert Gautney: Still time to sign up for Arvin City Amateur

    The 17th Arvin City Amateur Championship is scheduled to be played this weekend on the Sycamore Canyon golf course in Arvin, but a small field, if the tournament is played, will compete.

  5. Volleyball Clinic on May 26th

    May 26th Stockdale High School will be having a Clinic for girls and boys, ages 5 to 12.

  8. Kern athletes shine at Valley youth track and field meet in Kingsburg

    Kern County track and field athletes stole the spotlight May 12 in Kingsburg, winning more than half the events in the Valley Track and Field Championships.

    Next week's scheduled Kern County Women's Amateur Golf Championship has been cancelled because of a lack of signed-up players, tournament chairwoman Jacque Servadio confirmed.

    After 75 years of Women's Kern County Amateur golf, there will be no 76th tournament, at least perhaps for 2012 anyway.
