  1. Robert Gautney: Still time to sign up for Arvin City Amateur

BY ROBERT GAUTNEY Contributing golf columnist
    Wednesday, May 23 2012 06:06 PM

The 17th Arvin City Amateur Championship is scheduled to be played this weekend on the Sycamore Canyon golf course in Arvin, but a small field, if the tournament is played, will compete.

As of Wednesday afternoon, only a handful of players had signed up to play in the event which is the first of six of the Michelob Ultra/Sports Authority Player of the Year tournaments in which players earn points in the championship flight towards the 2012 Player of the Year title.

A call to the pro shop on Wednesday produced a "we are hoping for some late entries" reply. Last year about 25-30 players competed.

Anyone that would like to play should call the Sycamore pro shop at 854-3163. They will take entries thru Friday afternoon. The $90 entry includes both rounds greens fees and a practice round after 1 p.m this Friday.

Last year, Bryan Hogan, now a professional, won with a score of 68-71 for a 5-under 139 total. The first-round record is 66 by Jeff Brumfield in 2000 and Chad Wensel in 2003. The final round mark is 66 by Justin Pitts in 2007. Brumfield owns the tournament record when he added a 68 to his opening 66 in 2000 for a 10-under 134 total.
