  1. ROBERT GAUTNEY: Strong field set for Taft City Amateur

BY ROBERT GAUTNEY Contributing golf columnist
    Saturday, Aug 30 2014 12:29 AM

The field for the 7th Taft City Amateur this weekend at the Mifflin-Buena Vista golf course may be small, but the quality makes up for the lack of quantity.

Around 40 players are expected to tee it up for the annual event. Players in championship, net and senior flights will test their game over the smooth and rolling poa annua fairways and greens for 36 holes of play, 18 each Saturday and Sunday.

Defending champion Blake McPherson is back to defend his title, but it won't be easy. McPherson shot 8-under-par last year on rounds of 70-66. He beat Ron Killmer by two shots and Manav Shah by four and the win propelled him to the 2013 Michelob Ultra/Sports Authority Player of the Year award.
