The middle innings seemed more like a boxing match than a baseball game, as the Cal State Bakersfield and UC Irvine exchanged offensive blows throughout the game.

Irvine came out on top, scoring three runs in the final two innings to seal a 7-4 win over the Roadrunners at Hardt Field on Tuesday.

UC Irvine broke a 4-4 tie in the eighth inning on a two-run double by pinch hitter Ryan Cooper, and added an insurance run in the ninth.

CSUB (10-13) was able to get the bats started early, mustering a four-run rally on four hits in the bottom of the third inning to establish an early lead for pitcher Steven Gee.

The four-run rally started when center fielder Jordie Hein hit a single, followed by double from Max Carter. Two UC Irvine errors and RBI singles from Allen Gwynn and Logan Trowbridge contributed to the effort. Gwynn and Hein each had two hits in the game.

Carter was 3 for 4 with a walk, but struggled on the mound in relief of Gee, allowing two runs on three hits in 1-2/3 innings to take the loss.

Gee struck out four batters in his first three innings of work.

The fourth inning proved to be more difficult for Gee, as a couple pitches left high in the strike zone led to two consecutive home runs during Irvine's three-run rally.

Gee allowed four runs on four hits and two walks with four strikeouts in six innings.
