LOCAL REPORT: CSUB baseball holds on to beat Cal State Northridge

NORTHRIDGE -- Andrew Lojewski's two-run home run in the fourth inning was the difference Tuesday as Cal State Bakersfield nipped Cal State Northridge 3-2 in a non-conference baseball game.

Logan Trowbridge gave CSUB (8-11) a 1-0 lead in the second with an RBI triple. Lojewski's first homer as a Roadrunner made it 3-0.

Northridge (8-14) scored in the fifth and sixth, but CSUB center fielder David Metzgar kept the Roadrunners ahead by throwing out Dylan Alexander at the plate to end the sixth inning.

Max Carter, a freshman from Stockdale High, had two hits and pitched the final three innings for his second save.

Starter Alec Daily and relievers Garrett Nimmo and Carter combined on a five-hitter.

CSUB opens a three-game Western Athletic Conference home series with North Dakota at 6 p.m. Friday.

Canyons downs BC baseball

SANTA CLARITA -- College of the Canyons took advantage of wildness by Bakersfield College pitching to post a 16-7 Western State Conference-win.

BC starter Cole Hallum allowed only two hits but walked six and hit four batters in 4-2/3 innings. He allowed eight runs.

BC's five pitchers allowed only seven hits but walked 10 and hit five.

Kaidan Meadows had three hits and scored three runs for BC. Rolando Martinez, Hallum, Zach Tanner and Jake Verdugo added two hits each for BC (8-11, 4-3 WSC South). Canyons is 10-9-1 and 6-1 in the WSC.

Taft downs Porterville

TAFT -- Taft College overcame an early 2-0 lead by scoring three runs in the sixth and two in the seventh in a 5-2 Central Valley Conference baseball win over Porterville.

The Cougars (6-13, 2-8 CVC) scored in the sixth on an error, Roman Testani's RBI double and Chris Hopballe's RBI single. Bryan Nunez's RBI double and Travis Tessandori's RBI single in the seventh provided insurance.

Winning pitcher Brandon Van Stone allowed eight hits, two unearned runs and one walk in eight innings. Buddy Cooper finished up for his first save.

Tessandori, Testani, Hopballe and Matt Moorehead had two hits each for the Cougars.

CSUB-St. Mary's game scheduled

Friday's Women's National Invitation Tournament first-round game between Cal State Bakersfield and St. Mary's College will begin at 6 p.m. at St. Mary's, located in the Bay Area town of Moraga.

CSUB takes a 19-11 overall record into the game. St. Mary's is 22-9. Both teams were beaten in their respective conference tournament semifinals last weekend. Friday's game will be aired on KERN AM 1180.

The CSUB-St. Mary's winner will travel to the winner of the game between Texas-El Paso and Arkansas State at a date to be determined.

Renegades swept in softball

Bakersfield College lost a Western State Conference Blue Division softball doubleheader at home to College of the Canyons, 16-3 in five innings and 15-8 in eight innings.

BC's Erin Huckaby had a home run and single in the second game. Maddie Arambula went 4-for-5 in the twinbill with a home run and two walks.

The Renegades allowed several big innings, six- and eight-run innings in the opener and a 10-run eighth inning in the second game. BC is 6-13 overall and 2-4 in the WSC.
