Local report: Roadrunners drop sand VB opener

LOS ANGELES -- It didn't take long for the CSU Bakersfield sand volleyball program to record the first win in program history. On their first day of competition, the first-year Roadrunners defeated Grand Canyon 4-1 and lost 5-0 to USC 5-0.
Against Grand Canyon, Shayna Guitare and Mariah Alvidrez picked up a 2-1 (19-21, 21-20, 15-11) win in a close battle in the No. 2 match. In the No. 3 slot, Molly O'Hagan and Lisa Bartsch tallied a 2-0 (21-18, 21-17) win. Julia Bowen and Danika Youngblood teamed for a 2-0 (21-15, 21-14) victory in the No. 4 match. In the No. 5 showdown, and Star Tucker-Campbell paired up for a 2-0 (21-19, 21-13) win.
Against the third-ranked Trojans (2-1), Bartsch and O'Hagan went to three sets in their No. 3 showdown, but lost 2-1 (21-15, 19-21, 15-12). USC won the other four matches 2-0.
The Roadrunners will play in the USAV Collegiate Challenge today and Saturday at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, with tough matches slated against Florida State, Nebraska, Pepperdine and Grand Canyon.
CSUB to honor veterans Saturday
Cal State Bakersfield's baseball team will hold a Veterans Appreciation Day with special activities scheduled prior to and during Saturday's home doubleheader against Northern Colorado at Hardt Field.
Veterans will be admitted free of charge. Festivities honoring veterans will begin at 1:30 p.m. and include a motorcycle procession, a special color guard presentation and sky divers from Taft who will land on the pitching mound with baseballs. Veterans will also be introduced, and their military accomplishments described in between-inning announcements. For more information, call CSUB athletics at 654-BLUE.

VISALIA -- College of the Canyons swept Bakersfield College 10-6 and 7-1 in a Western State Conference softball doubleheader.
BC's Brittney Roberts had a solo home run in the opener. The Renegades (2-15, 1-4 WSC) will host the Renegade Classic beginning Saturday.
