Cal State Bakersfield finally found a way to beat USC in baseball.
The Roadrunners, before their second straight record crowd at Hardt Field, scored six runs over their final two at-bats to pull away in a 9-4 win before 1,301 fans at Hardt Field.
That crowed broke the previous record by more than 200 set one day earlier in CSUB's season-opening win over Nebraska.
The Roadrunners took advantage of 10 walks by USC pitching. Every spot in CSUB's batting order had at least one walk.
"You look at the box score and you see us with one walk and they have 10, who do you think is going to win?" CSUB coach Bill Kernen said.
USC freshman pitcher Kyle Davis, in his collegiate debut, issued two straight walks, including a go-ahead, four-pitch walk to Kevin Younger that broke a 3-3 tie in the seventh.
Senior Matt Munson then replaced Davis and walked pinch hitter Mylz Jones to force in another run and make it 5-3.
CSUB broke it open in the eighth. A walk and hit batter set up a bases-loaded, three-run triple by catcher Cael Brockmeyer.
Dylan Christensen then singled through a drawn-in infield for an insurance run.
CSUB starter Scott Brattvet pitched seven innings, allowing six hits and one walk with eight strikeouts. Taylor Aikenhead worked the final two innings for the save.
CSUB plays host to Cal State Fullerton (3-0) today, a 2 p.m. game at Hardt Field.
Oscar Sanay reached base five times for the Roadrunners, twice on hit by pitches, plus a walk, single and double. Sanay was also hit by pitches twice in Friday’s opener.
The Roadrunners had never beaten USC in five prior meetings.
It’s been a rough week for the Trojans (0-2). Their head coach, Frank Cruz, was fired Thursday stemming from an NCAA violation dealing with practice time.
“It’s a Pac-12 quality program,” Kernen said.
“When I was hired here, one of the things I told everybody I wanted to get the program to a place where we play USC and lose and it’s an upset. “We didn’t lose today but I think we’re better than they are.”
