Local report: BC tops Hancock in baseball, improves to 7-1

SANTA MARIA -- Relief pitcher Winston Ives tossed four shutout innings and struck out the side in the ninth for his first save as Bakersfield College's baseball team rallied to beat Allan Hancock College 8-4.
Ives struck out five and walked none while allowing only two baserunners. Ryan Stapp started and improved to 3-0.
BC (7-1) scored four runs in the fourth to take the lead and added three in the seventh. Second baseman Erik Williams had three doubles and scored twice the lead the BC offense.
Blayne Ontiveros, Justin Martinez and Cole Hallum added two hits each for BC.
The Renegades open Western State Conference play Saturday at Canyons at 1 p.m.
Jr. Olympics swimming at BC
About 1,000 youth swimmers from throughout the region will converge on the Bakersfield College pool today through Monday for the Central California Junior Olympics Swimming Championships.
Competition will start at 8 a.m. each day.
Swimmers age 7-14 will compete with a chance to qualify for the Junior Nationals starting March 19 at Orlando, Fla.
The Central California meet will be hosted by the Bakersfield Aquatics Club.
Water polo cracks top 25
Cal State Bakersfield's water polo team is ranked No. 20 in this week's Collegiate Water Polo Association poll, the first time the Roadrunners have cracked the top 20 in this poll since last March 12.
Six conferences and the NAIA vote in the poll. The top five teams in this week's poll are in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation with CSUB. Those schools are Stanford, USC, UCLA, California and Arizona State. CSUB is 3-8 with all losses against ranked teams.
Pro debut set for 3 CSUB women
Former Cal State Bakersfield women's soccer players Kassi Massey, Tara Corcoran and Sam Pena have been selected to be members of the Austin Nationals, a professional women's soccer exhibition team based in Austin, Texas.
The three former Roadrunners participated in a tryout for the squad on Jan. 25-27 and were recently announced as team members.
Massey and Pena completed their CSUB eligibility last fall and Corcoran graduated in 2011.
They are scheduled to make their pro debuts Saturday when they face Texas A&M in the first match of the spring college tour portion of their schedule.
