Local report: CSUB softball team drops two in opening day of tournament

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State Bakersfield opened its softball season Saturday with a pair of losses at the Stacy Winsburg Memorial Tournament at UCLA.

The Roadrunners lost 4-2 to McNeese State and 7-1 to No. 19-ranked Texas A&M.

CSUB scored both runs against McNeese State in the third. Two-out singles by Laura King, Amy Ricciardi and Jessica Castaneda scored King, and Ricciardi stole home on the front end of a double steal.

Against Texas A&M, the Roadrunners were held to two hits -- singles by King and Ashley Carter. CSUB scored in the sixth on an error, sacrifice and King's RBI single to right. A&M had two home runs by first baseman Nicole Morgan, a solo shot in the sixth and a grand slam that highlighted a five-run seventh that broke the game open.

CSUB concludes the tournament with a 2 p.m. game today against Long Beach State.

CSUB water polo earns split

LA JOLLA -- The Cal State Bakersfield women's water polo team fell 11-3 to No. 13 UC Santa Barbara and beat Sonoma State 12-11 on the first day of the UCSD Triton Classic.

Sam Shead, Janelle Shelby and Niki De Leon each scored for the Roadrunners against Santa Barbara..

Shannon McKenzie scored with 2:18 remaining in the fourth quarter to give CSUB a 12-11 victory over Sonoma State in the final match of pool play. The match was tied after each of the first three quarters. Taylor Hanson and Nicola Barrett each recorded hat tricks. McKenzie and Shead scored twice.

The Roadrunners face No. 15 Loyola Marymount at noon today to begin the final day of the event.

BC pounds Marin in baseball

VISALIA -- Erik Williams and Cole Hallum each had two hits and two RBIs, and Bakersfield College capitalized on six College of Marin errors en route to a 10-4 win at the College of the Sequoias tournament.

Winston Ives (1-0) worked six innings to notch the victory and Daniel Lamoureaux had two innings of scoreless middle relief for the Renegades (5-1).

Luc Pomales was 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI, and Blayne Ontiveros had a triple for BC, which plays host to Golden West today at 1 p.m.

Taft loses on three-run homer

TAFT -- Taft College lost a heartbreaker when Marcos Sanchez launched a three-run home run in the top of the ninth inning to spoil an otherwise solid Cougars' pitching effort and left Barstow to a 3-1 win.

Taft (3-3-1) manufactured a run in the third inning following a single by Travis Tessandori and led 1-0 with one out in the ninth before Barstow (4-1) rallied with four hits, capped by the Sanchez blast.

Kevin Little and P.J. Matha combined to limit Barstow to one hit in eight innings before the rally.

Tessandori and Clint Jorgensen each had two hits for the Cougars, who host Monterey at 1 p.m. Friday.

BC men's basketball team falls to Canyons

The Bakersfield College men's basketball team fought back from a six-point halftime deficit, but eventually lost 69-68 to College of the Canyons at the Gil Bishop Sports Center. Lester Conroy scored 17 points and Damian Robinson had 10 points and 10 rebounds for BC (9-13, 3-5 Western State Conference South), which outshot the Cougars from the field 42 percent to 38 percent. Canyons (18-6, 8-0) outrebounded BC, 41-25.

Canyons tops BC women's basketball team

The BC women's basketball team lost an important Western State Conference South showdown, 75-55, to visiting College of the Canyons.

Andrea Harris had 12 points and Brittany Smith and MacKenzie Odle each grabbed 11 rebounds each for the Renegades. BC trailed 36-30 at halftime.

Earnika Clemmons had 12 points and 25 rebounds to help Canyons (17-8, 7-2 WSC) overtake BC (13-11, 6-3 WSC) for second place in the standings.

Jam game postponed because of weather

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- The Bakersfield Jam game against the Springfield Armor scheduled for Saturday night was postponed because of weather conditions in the Northeast that prevented Bakersfield from traveling to Massachusetts. No new date for the game has been set.
