CSUB's Iwamura, Hammond capture Pac-12 wrestling titles

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Cal State Bakersfield crowned two individual champions, the program's first since 2010, and finished fourth as a team at Saturday's Pac-12 Wrestling Championships.
Tyler Iwamura, the No. 1 seed at 125 pounds reached the finals by defeating Britain Longmire of Cal Poly 10-0, and then beat Stanford's Evan Silver for the third time this season in the final to earn an automatic berth into the NCAA Division I National Championships, March 13.
Bakersfield High graduate Bryce Hammond topped the No. 1 seed, Blake Stauffer, 9-4, in the 174-pound finals.
Former Drillers Timmy Box and Adam Fierro also faired well. Box finished runner-up after losing in the finals, while Fierro was third.
CSUB received fifth place finishes from Dalton Kelley at 149, David Meza (165), Frankie Hurtado (197) and Sammy Cervantes (285). Ian Nickell finished sixth.
CSUB women's swimming
SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- The Cal State Bakersfield 400 free relay broke the school record to highlight the final day of the Western Athletic Conference Championships.
The 400 free relay with Michaela Paige, Ali Gillespie, Louise Westergren and Kelsey Lange lowered the school mark to 3 minutes 25.02 seconds. The team finished fourth.
Delise Batiza finished eighth in the 1,650 freestyle in the second fastest time in school history, 17:04.84. Her 1,000 split of 10:17.41 is a new school record.
Gillespie won the "B" final of the 100 freestyle with the fifth fastest time in school history, 51.28. She was ninth overall. Lange placed 12th (:51.69) in the 100 free to score points for the 'Runners.
Caitlyn Lozano was 13th in the 200 butterfly. Her time of 2:05.93 was the third fastest in school history.
CSUB set six school records and posted 19 top five performances during the WAC Championships. The Roadrunners finished eighth (188). San Jose State (695) won the team title.
"This was a great experience but you can tell we are real young," said CSUB director of swimming Chris Hansen in a press release. "Our freshman need to step up their prelim swims, our divers need to do platform and everyone needs to score. I saw a lot of great swims from out newcomers but we need to grow into the WAC. Our seniors defiantly lead the pack this weekend. I am super proud of this amazing group of women."
CSUB softball
FULLERTON -- Cal State Bakersfield lost a doubleheader at the Easton Invitational at Cal State Fullerton, falling 5-3 loss to Iowa and 11-4 to Wisconsin at Anderson Family Field.
In the first game, the 'Runners rallied from a 4-0 deficit and cut the lead to 4-2 in the fifth.
Amy Ricciardi and Amber Mills led off the inning with singles, and after advancing on Taylor DeSilva's sacrifice bunt, Kara Frankhouser grounded out to score Ricciardi. Sydney Raeber followed with an RBI single.
In the sixth inning, Iowa (14-5) added run, but CSUB countered with a run-scoring single by McKenzie Zinger.
Against Wisconsin (13-3), CSUB trailed 7-0 before responding with three runs in the sixth.
The 'Runners will be back in action today with gamesagainst Northwestern at 9 a.m., followed by an 11:45 a.m. game against Oregon State.
JC baseball
SYLMAR -- Justin Martinez hit two home runs and Jordan Turner added another to lead Bakersfield College to its sixth straight win, 8-6 over L.A, Mission (6-7, 3-2) in Western State Conference South play.
Martinez, from Centennial High, had four RBI. He leads the state with four home runs this season.
Sophomore left-hander Justin Kelly (3-1) pitched six innings to earn the victory for the Renegades (13-2, 6-1), who are ranked No. 4 in this week's Southern Californian JC poll.
Freshmen Kyle Nixon and Rolando Martinez were each 3-for-5 for the Renegades, who play host to L.A. Mission at 3 p.m. Tuesday.
Taft College managed just four hits and committed six errors as Fresno capitalized with nine unearned runs en route to a 12-0 victory in Central Valley Conference play.
Dayton Kurian was 2-for-4 for the Cougars (4-11-1, 1-5), who next play at Porterville on March 12.
CSUB water polo
PALO ALTO -- No. 2 Stanford defeated the Roadrunners 16-3 in the MPSF Water Polo opener.
Shannon McKenzie scored twice while Sam Shead had the other goal for CSUB. Shead and Niki De Leon both drew two ejections.
