CSUB's Konya appointed to soccer committee

Jeff Konya, who has been Cal State Bakersfield's athletic director for two years, has been appointed to the 10-person NCAA Division I men's soccer committee.
It is a four-year appointment that will take effect on Sept. 1.
The committee is responsible for selecting and seeding teams for the NCAA men's soccer tournament, along with staffing and assigning officials for tournament games.
"I'm very pleased to serve the NCAA membership in this role as interest in NCAA men's soccer is on an upward trend nationally," Konya said in a statement. "Bakersfield has shown a passion for our soccer program and for the sport; I plan on taking that same passion and using it in this role on a national level."
CSUB announces 3 local signings
Cal State Bakersfield has confirmed the signings to letters of intent by three Kern County high school distance runners.
The Californian earlier reported that Stockdale's Tori Blackmon, Ridgeview's Lashya Morgan and Shafter's Nicolette Aldape had signed on or shortly after the Feb. 6 NCAA mandated signing date.
"We look to each of these young women to be high impact student athletes on the cross country and track and field team," Marcia Mansur-Wentworth, CSUB's director of track and field, said in a statement. said.
Mansur-Wentworth said Blackmon and Aldape will run cross country and compete in the middle- and long-distance events in track.
Morgan will compete in cross country and the distance events in track.
The incoming freshmen will participate in the 2013-14 season when CSUB begins its first season in the Western Athletic Conference.
CSUB softball WAC-bound
Cal State Bakersfield's softball program, which is currently in its final season in the Pacific Coast Softball Conference, will compete in the Western Athletic Conference in softball starting in 2014. The Roadrunners were scheduled to compete in the West Coast Conference in softball starting next season as the WCC adds the sport.
CSUB is joining the WAC on July 1 for most of its athletic offerings. WAC interim commissioner Jeff Hurd, who attended CSUB's first two baseball games of the season on Friday and Saturday, said the WAC is keeping softball as a conference sport now that Missouri-Kansas City has accepted an invitation to join the WAC on July 1.
UMKC gives the WAC six softball-playing members, Hurd noted, which allows the WAC to keep an automatic qualifying spot into the NCAA Softball Tournament.
CSUB could be looking at being assessed an exit fee by the WCC, athletic director Jeff Konya said Sunday, adding that WAC officials are handling those negotiations.
Konya added that hoped the WAC would pay any exit fee the WCC charges CSUB.
