Local report: Condors earn weekend split with Bulls

DALY CITY -- Brian Stewart made 40 saves and the Bakersfield Condors earned a split on the weekend with a 4-2 victory Sunday over the San Francisco Bulls at the Cow Palace.
The Condors (15-34-2-3, 35 points) trail the Bulls (18-24-1-6, 43 points) by eight points for the final ECHL Western Conference playoff spot.
Bakersfield defenseman Kyle Haines opened the scoring in unorthodox fashion.
After he lost his stick in the Condors zone, he took forward Scott Freeman's right-handed stick -- Hanes shoots left -- collected a loose neutral-zone puck and finished off a breakaway through the legs of Bulls goaltender Thomas Heemskerk to give the Condors a 1-0 lead at 14:45 of the first period.
With the Condors short-handed in the final minute, forward Jacob Lagace capped off a 2-on-1 with his 13th goal of the season to make it 2-0.
The Bulls cut the Condors' lead to 2-1 at 3:07 of the second period, when forward Petr Sivak tucked a shot from the side of the net past Stewart.
Bakersfield responded 57 seconds later when Freeman banged home a rebound off a Tyler Maxwell's backhanded effort to make it 3-1.
Stewart came under siege late in the period as the Condors surrendered five power plays, but the penalty kill came up big and kept the Bulls at bay. San Francisco held the shot advantage, 16-2.
San Francisco inched closer once again, trimming Bakersfield's lead to 3-2 when Sivak scored his second of the night from the blue line at 16:18 of the third period.
Nicholas Tremblay closed the scoring when he broke in all alone off a feed from Jake Morley and beat Heemskerk to seal the win.
The Condors made national news whena video of a promotion from Friday's night's game gone awry has already been seen nearly 80,000 times this weekend, and drawn reaction from media outlets ranging from ESPN's "SportsCenter" to Yahoo Sports Canada to the Los Angeles Times.
The buzz centers around a live Andean condor getting loose inside Rabobank Arena during and after the singing of the national anthem.
The bird first escaped from its handler and fell to the ice, where it
slipped as it tried to escape. The condor's handler too slipped on the ice while trying to retrieve the bird. At that point, the condor took flight toward the team benches before heading into the locker room.

LOS ANGELES -- Freshman designated player Jessica Castaneda connected for an RBI double on her birthday, but it was one of the few bright spots in the Roadrunners' 5-1 loss to Long Beach State in UCLA's Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament at Easton Stadium.
The game was the final of the opening weekend for CSUB (0-3).
The Roadrunners took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning after Laura King was hit by a pitch, stole second, and after being replaced by pinch runner Taylor DeSilva, Castaneda crushed a line drive double over the head of 49er left fielder Nalani St. Germain to score DeSilva.
Long Beach State (2-1) fought back in the bottom of the frame as Sarah Carrasco hit a two-run double to put Long Beach State up 2-1 and chase CSUB freshman starter Amber Mills.

LA JOLLA -- The 'Runners split on the final day of the UCSD Triton Classic to finish 11th in the tournament.
CSUB lost to No. 15 Loyola Marymount defeated CSUB 9-8 and then defeated Cal State East Bay, 10-8.
"If we play with the intensity we showed against LMU, good things will happen in every game for us," said CSUB coach Jason Gall in a press release.
Janelle Shelby scored four goals while Niki De Leon had two against East Bay.
