Richard Menjivar, who played soccer at Cal State Bakersfield in 2010 and 2011, has signed a contract with the Atlanta Silverbacks of the North American Soccer League, the second tier of the American soccer pyramid.
Menjivar is a midfielder on El Salvador's national team. He had seven goals and five assists in 39 career matches at CSUB.
"The fact that we can add someone of Richie's quality speaks volumes about the Silverbacks and also the league," Atlanta coach Brian Haynes said in a release. "He is going to be a key leader for us on the field and I think he'll bring out the best in his teammates as well. We were looking for a player like Richie and I'm glad to say we found him."
Menjivar, who was born in Panorama City in the Los Angeles area, played two seasons at the University of Evansville before transferring to CSUB.
He will join Atlanta when the club breaks training camp in early March.
BC edges Hartnell, 6-5
Bakersfield College's Justin Martinez singled and scored in a two-run second and capped a four-run fourth with an RBI single as BC downed Hartnell 6-5 at the Sequoias Tournament game at Gerry Collis Field.
Jake Verdugo's RBI single and a run-scoring error gave BC its two runs in the second. In the fourth, a wild throw on a sacrifice bunt scored the first run, Blayne Ontiveros had a two-run single and Martinez added his RBI hit. BC starter Ryan Stapp (2-0) allowed five hits and one walk with seven strikeouts in six innings. Logan Campbell struck out two in the ninth and earned his second save.
The game was scheduled for 10:30 a.m. at College of the Sequoias in Visalia, but was switched to BC due to rain. Today's game time at COS against Marin College has been changed to a 2 p.m. start.
Brandon Van Stone (1-0) scattered five hits in seven innings, striking out three to lead Taft College to a 3-0 victory over College of the Siskiyous.
CSUB's Cruz honored
Senior cross country runner Melisa Cruz of Cal State Bakersfield has been named to the Great West Conference's 2012 Fall Academic all-conference team.
Cruz, a West High graduate, has already earned a bachelor's degree in liberal studies and is currently pursuing her master's degree in counseling-student affairs, has a 3.58 GPA in her master's program.
There were 108 GWC athletes named to the team, including 20 women's cross country runners.
To be eligible, athletes must maintain at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average and must have participated in at least 50 percent of their respective teams' contests.
McNeal, Butch pace Jam
Jerel McNeal had 28 points seven assists and six rebounds, and Brian Butch added 26 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Bakersfield Jam past the Maine Red Claws 104-94 on the first game of a their three-game East Coast road trip.
Renaldo Major had 18 points while Damion James added 10 points, four rebounds and four assists for Bakersfield (20-9).
Maine (18-13) was paced by Chris Wright's 27 points and 13 rebounds. Kris Joseph tallied 23 points and six rebounds off the bench for the Red Claws. Shelvin Mack had 14 points while Xavier Silas scored 10 points.
Bakersfield will continue its East Coast trip today against the Springfield (Mass.) Armor.
IHS sprinter Andrews signs with Nebraska
Independence High senior Brena Andrews signed a national letter of intent to run for the track and field team at Nebraska.
Andrews won Central Section titles in both the 100 meters (11.87) and 200 meters (24.44) last year and place eighth in the 200 at the CIF State Championships, the first individual state track medal in Independence history.
