Local report: Monroe tosses 1-hitter as 'Runners earn split

The Cal State Bakersfield softball team split a doubleheader with Sacramento State, defeating the Hornets 6-1 in the opener before falling 2-1 in the finale.

Roadrunner starting pitcher Kelsie Monroe tossed a one-hitter in the opener, walking three and striking out four.

Karissa Veiga, Sydney Raeber, Jessica Castaneda and Madison Bundy had two hits apiece for CSUB (7-20).

In the second game, Roadrunner starter Amber Mills allowed just two runs on five hits, but CSUB managed just two hits.

Sacramento State scored first with a couple of singles and some small ball in the fourth to take a 1-0 lead. The 'Runners tied the game the next half inning when Amy Ricciardi singled home Mills, who had reached on an error.

The Hornets scored again in the bottom of the sixth after a one-out double set up a two-out RBI single by Nikki Giaketsis.

CSUB closes out the series against Sacramento State (9-13) at 11 a.m today.

Baseball

Freshman Allan Winans pitched eight scoreless innings, allowing eight hits while striking out seven to lead Bakersfield College to a 5-0 victory over West L.A. in Western State Conference South play at Gerry Collis Field.

Winans (3-2) did not walk a batter. Jared Kashwer completed the shutout with a scoreless ninth.

Erik Williams was 2 for 2 with four RBIs and Rolando Martinez went 2 for 3 for the Renegades (8-10, 4-2).

Williams had a two-run singles in the first, singled in another run in the fifth and drove in another with a sacrifice fly in the seventh.

Track and field

Bakersfield College thrower Alicia Torres posted a pair of top-10 finishes to highlight the local performances in the final day of the Ben Brown Invitational in Fullerton.

Torres was second in the women's shot put with a throw of 41 feet, 5-1/4 inches, and was eighth in the discus (116-0).

Cal State Bakersfield's 4x100 relay team of Marina Emhoff, Erica Wilcox, Dominique Alexander and Alyssa Page finished third in 47.68. Page was sixth in the women's 200 in 24.7.

The Roadrunners' Ariana Mariscal was fourth in the 800 at 2:15.28.

The Bakersfield College women's 4x400 relay of Jade Gridiron, Natalie O'Dwyer, Reshana Watson and Jessica Campbell was sixth in 4:01.85.

Women's water polo

Cal State Bakersfield split a pair of matches at the Arizona State Invitstional in Tempe, Ariz.

The Roadrunners (11-15) dropped the opener to the host Sun Devils, ranked fifth, 14-3. Bridgette Souza scored twice, while Janelle Shelby had the other 'Runner goal. Niki De Leon drew three exclusions.

Souza scored the game-winning goal with two minutes left in overtime in CSUB's 10-9 victory over Azusa Pacific.

De Leon had three goals and three steals to pace the Roadrunners. Paige Tsuruda and Kristen Jensen each scored twice. Jensen also had five steals and Courtney Wahlstrom made 11 saves.

CSUB concludes the tournament today at 8:30 a.m. against Whittier and Marist at 1 p.m.

Men's Tennis

Bakersfield College split a pair of matches at Fresno City College, defeating Reedley 9-0, and then losing to Foothill 7-2.

Jesse Fonseca at No. 4 singles and No. 6 singles player Jimmy Moren each won both their matches.
