Local report: CSUB releases men's basketball home schedule

By The Bakersfield Californian

Cal State Bakersfield has announced most of its home basketball schedule for the 2013-14 season, the program's inaugural season in the Western Athletic Conference.

Seven games will be played in Rabobank Arena, including five WAC games: the WAC opener vs. Utah Valley on Jan. 4; Grand Canyon on Jan. 9; Seattle on Feb. 15; Texas-Pan American on Feb. 27; and the regular season finale vs. New Mexico State on March 1.

The Rabobank games also feature two non-league contests: Nov. 18, vs. Nevada and Dec. 5, vs. Santa Clara.

Seven games will be played at Icardo Center, with one of those yet to be determined.

The six games set for Icardo includes the home opener on Nov. 11, vs. UC Merced; Sacramento State on Nov. 13; Idaho State on Nov. 23; and WAC games on Jan. 23, vs. Chicago State; Jan. 25, vs. Missouri-Kansas City; and Feb. 13, vs. Idaho.

The complete schedule with road games is expected to be finalized soon.

"I'm very pleased with our home schedule and the quality of opponents we have coming in to face us in Bakersfield," CSUB coach Rod Barnes said in a release. "We have the luxury of playing in two quality venues and we expect plenty of support in both arenas as we play for the first time in the WAC."

Three opponents playing in Rabobank had 20-win seasons last year. Santa Clara went 26-12.

New Mexico State, the top WAC team last season, went 24-11. Grand Canyon, a first-year WAC member like CSUB that will also play its first full Division I schedule, went 23-8 as an NCAA Division II school last season.

All six of CSUB's opponents facing the Roadrunners in the Icardo Center had sub-.500 seasons last year. Sacramento State had the best record from that group at 14-15 with Idaho next-best at 12-18.

CSUB has announced that season tickets are on sale. Seven-game half-season packages for the games played at either Rabobank or Icardo start at $65. Full-season packages begin at $115.

Also new this season in Rabobank games is "Rowdy's Nest," a catered courtside suite available for 20-25 people for $495 per game.

CSUB has also announced that those renewing their season tickets by Friday will be entered to win a pair of all-session passes to the 2014 WAC Basketball Tournament that will be played in Las Vegas.

Haney wins again

Stockdale junior Blake Haney won the 1,500-meter race at the USATF Youth World Trials in Carbondale, Ill., his second national youth title in as many days.

Haney took the 1,500 in 4:00.71, holding off Grant Fisher of Michigan, who ran 4:00.95. Those two were also first and second in a tight 3,000-meter race Tuesday, with Haney winning there, too.

Finishing in the top two at the trials makes an athlete eligible for selection to the IAAF World Youth Championships next month in Ukraine. Nothing is guaranteed, but Stockdale coach Dave Lonsinger said via text Wednesday night that USA Track and Field had informed Haney he would be a part of the world team.

The last Kern County athlete to compete at the World Youth Games was Stockdale graduate Alex Collatz, who won the gold medal in the girls discus at the 2009 Youth Games in Italy.

Blaze falls to 1-6

Bakersfield's Ryan Wright hit a three-run homer in the ninth, but it wasn't enough as the Lancaster JetHawks defeated the Blaze 11-7 at Sam Lynn Ballpark.

Wright finished 2-for-3 with four RBIs and Joe Terry was 2-for-4 for Bakersfield (1-6). Lancaster improved to 7-0.
