LA QUINTA -- Bakersfield golfer Bhavik Patel shot a 2-under 70 and was tied for 50th place among 172 Wednesday after the opening round of the final stage of PGA Tour Qualifying.
The six-round event runs through Monday at the PGA West Nicklaus Tournament and TPC Stadium courses.
Steve LeBrun of West Palm Beach, Fla., shot an 8-under-64 on the TPC Stadium Course for the first-round lead. Four players shot 65s, also on the TPC course.
Patel, who played the Nicklaus Course, had five birdies and three bogeys.
The top 25 and ties secure PGA Tour status for 2013, and the next 50 and ties receive Web.com Tour cards.
Sweden's Robert Karlsson, an 11-time winner on the European Tour, shot a 66 on the Nicklaus Course. Two-time heart transplant recipient Erik Compton had a 67 on the TPC Course.
BC football ticket update
Ticket sales for the Dec. 8 state JC football championship, with Bakersfield College hosting City College of San Francisco at Memorial Stadium, will go on sale at noon today to Bakersfield College faculty, staff and students.
At 8 a.m. Monday, tickets will go on sale to the general public at the BC ticket office.
More than 1,500 tickets were sold on Wednesday when tickets were made available to season ticket holders. Kickoff will be at 2 p.m. Dec. 8.
BC men fall to West Hills
COALINGA -- Bakersfield College freshman Conroy Lester scored 19 points, but the Renegades lost 62-58 to West Hills in a non-conference game.
BC (1-4) returns home on Saturday to host Santa Barbara City College at 3 p.m.
