Local report: Roadrunner women's team falls to UC Riverside

TreShont Nottingham scored 29 points to lead UC Riverside past Cal State Bakersfield, 75-63 Sunday at the Icardo Center.

Nottingham went 15-of-15 from the free-throw line, grabbed nine rebounds, and dished out eight assists, playing all 40 minutes.

The Highlanders led by 16 with 14:17 remaining in the second half before CSUB chopped the lead down to five with 5:20 to go. UC Riverside used a 9-0 spurt to push the lead back into double figures for good.

Brooklynn Hinkens led CSUB with a season-high 12 points. Batabe Zempare scored 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Cebrina Johnson recorded 11 rebounds and eight points.

JC volleyball

Bakersfield College and Taft College both earned playoff berths for Tuesday's first-round matches.

The Renegades (20-5) are the No. 2 seed and will host No. 15 Antelope Valley College (17-5) at 7 p.m. in the Southern California playoffs.

The Cougars (17-7) are ther No. 9 seed in the Northern California playoffs and will travel to No. 8 Gavilan College (18-8).

NBA D-League preseason

The Bakersfield Jam fell short in overtime Saturday night against the Los Angeles D-Fenders, 120-117 in a preseason game at the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario.

Down 58-47 at halftime, the Jam outscored the D-Fenders 31-18 in the third quarter to take a 78-76 lead into the final period.

The fourth quarter remained a battle. The Jam held a 106-104 lead with 12.9 seconds left in the game, but a D-Fenders 3-pointer gave them a 107-106 lead.

The Jam then made a free throw which sent it to overtime.

In overtime, the Jam fell behind early, 117-111, but fought back to tie the game at 117 courtesy of two 3s by Stephen Dennis.

With time running out, Darnell Dodson made a game-winning 3-pointer to give the D-Fenders the win.

Dennis led all scorers off the bench with 30 points to go along with four steals, three assists, and three rebounds. Damion James scored 17 points, grabbed six rebounds, and dished out four assists. Adam Koch finished with 11 points and five rebounds.

Los Angeles Lakers assignee Darius Johnson-Odom and Orien Greene led the D-Fenders with 22 points each.

The Jam opens the regular season on the road against the Rio Grande Valley Vipers at 5 p.m. Friday. The Jam's home opener comes a week later on Nov. 29 when it hosts the Idaho Stampede at 7 p.m.

JC cross country

The Bakersfield College women's cross country team finished 21st in the state championships at Woodward Park in Fresno.

Mariah Millwee (20 minutes, 31 seconds), Kristen Tapia (20:38), Orieth Rodriguez (20:55), Tejera Dial (21:19) and Danielle Tildahl (21:22) all posted season best times on the 5K course.

CSUB swimming

LONG BEACH -- The Roadrunner men's swimming team wrapped up competition at the Arena Invitational with a ninth-place finish Saturday.

Mitchell Huxhold posted the top individual CSUB result of the meet when he finished sixth in the 1650 freestyle (15:36.10).

The 400 free relay of Gabriel Bertrand, Charles Yuhas, Fran Cverle and Alex Daneke placed ninth with a time of 3:03.09.

Bertrand won the non-scoring final of the 100 freestyle in a time of 45.51 with Cverle (46.24, fifth in heat, 29th overall) and Yuhas (46.33, sixth in heat, 30th overall) posting fast times in the finals of the race.
