NORTHRIDGE -- Cal State Northridge rallied for two runs in the eighth inning and went on to beat Cal State Bakersfield 2-1 in a non-conference baseball game Monday afternoon.
CSUB freshman third baseman Mylz Jones had two singles in four at-bats to extend his hitting streak to a Roadrunner-record 20 games. He shared the previous record of 19 first set by Jeremy Rodriguez in 2010.
The game was scoreless until CSUB took a 1-0 lead in the top of the eighth.
Cael Brockmeyer grounded a one-out single to left field and eventually scored on Northridge third baseman Nicolas Osuna's error with two outs.
Brockmeyer had advanced to second on Jones' second hit of the game, and to third when Oscar Sanay's infield grounder forced Jones at second.
But the Matadors (13-14) scored twice in the bottom of the eighth off CSUB closer Dylan Christensen (1-3).
Ryan Raslowsky led off with a single to center, only the second hit of the game for Northridge.
After a strikeout, second baseman Sanay's throwing error on a fielder's choice grounder put runners on first and second.
Josh Goossen-Brown lined a two-run double down the left field line to give the Matadors the lead. Christensen got two straight groundouts after that but Goossen-Brown pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to close it out for his fifth save.
CSUB starting pitcher Jonathan Montoya pitched five hitless innings with four walks and two strikeouts. James Barragan replaced Montoya and pitched a scoreless sixth and seventh with three walks and three strikeouts.
The Roadrunners outhit Northridge 7-3 but stranded 11 baserunners.
CSUB left the bases loaded in the eighth and stranded two on base in both the fifth and sixth.
Roadrunners' McKenzie honored again as WAC Pitcher of the Week
Cal State Bakersfield senior pitcher Jeff McKenzie has been named Western Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week for the third time in the last four weeks.
McKenzie, from El Dorado Hills in the Sacramento area, pitched a four-hit 4-0 complete game win over New Mexico State in CSUB's first-ever WAC baseball game Friday at Hardt Field.
McKenzie has allowed one earned run over his last 35 2/3 innings. He is 6-1 with a 1.17 ERA this season.
CSUB is tied for third place in the WAC after two weeks with a 4-2 record. Texas-Arlington and Texas State are tied for first with 5-1 records. CSUB starts a three-game series at Texas-Arlington on Friday.
