A win Thursday gave Cal State Bakersfield its first home victory since late November.

It was crucial for the Roadrunners to back that up on Saturday night, and they responded by putting together one of their finest efforts of the season.

CSUB never gave up its lead over the final 35 minutes of play and coasted to an 83-65 Western Athletic Conference win over Seattle before 1,149 in Rabobank Arena.

"This may have been our best half of defense," CSUB coach Rod Barnes said of the final 20 minutes, when the Redhawks were held to 28.6 percent shooting and were plagued by turnover problems.

"I told our guys it would turn around and I think it's starting to turn."

CSUB (11-14, 4-7 WAC) shot 52 percent and had only eight turnovers, which was significant because Seattle (12-12, 4-7) went to a fierce ball-hawking, trapping defense over the final 14 minutes to try and cut into what was then a 14-point Bakersfield lead.

The Roadrunners did go cold, going without a point for nearly four minutes as Seattle pulled within 47-41.

But Javonte Maynor ended the scoreless stretch with a 3-pointer and the Roadrunners' lead never dropped below 11 points the final eight minutes of the game.

"They got on us for a long time," said senior point guard Issiah Grayson, who had a game-high 22 points and six assists. "We just listened to our coaches. He (Barnes) calmed us down."

Junior guard Tyrell Corbin played a key role by providing an extra ball handler against the Redhawks' pressure. Corbin also sank 8-of-10 free throws and finished with 10 points.

Corbin said CSUB was prepared for the high intensity defense thrown at it.

"It's 10 times worse in practice every day," Corbin said. "It was sort of routine for us."

Seattle junior point guard Isiah Umipig came into the game with WAC highs in per-game scoring (19.3) and 3-pointers made (75).

But he had only six points until the final 2:54 of the game when he added two more. He finished with 12 points and was only 4-of-12 on 3s.

"He's one of the top players in the league," Grayson said. "Coach stressed to us we had to stop him early. We did a pretty good job."

Umipig had a game-high 21 points in CSUB's 61-57 win at Seattle on Jan. 16.

"He was our main focus," Barnes said. "The second time through you make other adjustments and make other people beat you."

Aly Ahmed added 15 points and eight rebounds while Maynor and Brandon Barnes added 11 points each for CSUB.

CSUB is at Kansas City Thursday and at Chicago State on Saturday.
