'Runners' must-win game postponed in scoreless tie

By THE BAKERSFIELD CALIFORNIAN

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas -- Cal State Bakersfield was in a scoreless tie with the University of Texas-San Antonio when their Western Athletic Conference tournament game was delayed Friday night because of thunderstorms.

The game, which will determine the Pool A representative in Sunday's title game, will resume today at 8 a.m. as a 0-0 tie in the top of the fifth inning. San Antonio's John Welborn, who doubled to open the fifth inning, was on second base with no outs when the game was postponed.

Entering the fifth, CSUB starter Scott Brattvet had thrown four scoreless innings. His counterpart, Nolan Trabanino, had thrown four scoreless innings as well.

The winner of Pool A will face the winner of Pool B in the title game.

All four Pool B teams -- No. 2 Texas-Arlington, No. 3 Texas State, No. 6 New Mexico State and No. 7 seed Dallas Baptist -- have 1-1 records entering the final day of pool play. Dallas Baptist plays New Mexico State and Texas State plays Arlington today. The tiebreaker will go to the team that won the head-to-head matchup in the tourney.
