Cal State Bakersfield has signed three women's basketball players to letters of intent.
They are 6-foot point guard Alize Lofton, who led Lynwood High to the CIF Division II state championship in March; 6-3 post player Brittany Sims from Fresno-Edison; and 6-2 forward Miranda Williamson from Wildomar-Elsinore in Southern California.
Lofton averaged 9.3 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.6 steals per game last season. Sims was the County/Metro Athletic Conference MVP when she led Edison to a 23-6 record and into the Central Section quarterfinals.
Williamson averaged nine points and 8.2 rebounds per game as a junior at Martin Luther King High in Elsinore. She transferred to Elsinore High before last season and was unable to play because of a transfer rule.
Stockdale grad Vela earns Big West honor
Stockdale High graduate Justine Vela, a sophomore pitcher at UC Davis, received All-Big West Conference first-team honors for the second consecutive season. Leading a pitching staff that ended 2013 campaign with the lowest ERA in the conference, Vela also led all Big West pitchers with a .177 opposing batting average this season -- more than 20 percentage points lower than the league's second-ranked pitcher.
In addition to compiling a 15-10 record and a career-low 2.03 ERA, Vela also fanned 175 batters throughout her 1722/3 innings in the circle and was one of only three Big West pitchers to average more than one strikeout per inning pitched.
Vela earned Big West Freshman Pitcher and Conference Pitcher of the Year as a freshman.
