RENO, Nev. -- Cal State Bakersfield's Ian Nickell finished fourth at 141 pounds and Jose Mendoza (133) placed fifth to lead Cal State Bakersfield at the Reno Tournament of Champions.
Nickell won his first four matches to advance to the semifinals, where he lost to No. 6 Evan Henderson of North Carolina a minute into the match. Nickell won his consolation semifinal to advance to the third-place match, where he was beaten 13-0 by Anthony Abdin of Nebraska.
Mendoza won his first four matches to make it to the semifinals. In the semis, he lost to Michigan State's Javier Gasca III, who was wrestling unattached, 11-9. Mendoza dropped his consolation semi to West Virginia's Nathan Pennsi 11-9. Mendoza placed fifth by decisioning Troy Heilman of North Carolina 6-3.
Dalton Kelley went 4-2 at 149 pounds with one of his losses coming to No. 5 Jake Sufholn of Nebraska. David Meza (165) was 4-2. His first loss of the day was to No. 8 Jim Wilson of Stanford. Reuben Franklin (197) was 4-2, losing twice to Boise State's Cody Dixon.
No. 8 Nebraska won the team title.
CSUB was 10th.
The Roadrunners' next will compete to the mats Dec. 29-30 at the Midlands Championships hosted by Northwestern in Evanston, Ill.
