Sound splits with Barons in opening two games

By THE BAKERSFIELD CALIFORNIAN

The Los Angeles Barons pounded out 14 hits en route to a 14-2 victory over the Bakersfield Sound in Tuesday's California Collegiate League game at Bakersfield Christian.

The Sound committed three errors behind starter Seth Varner, who gave up three earned runs on seven hits, striking out five in five innings.

AJ Steimel homered for one of the few bright spots for Bakersfield, and Ryan Land had an RBI single.

The teams close the four-game series with a doubleheader today, starting at 3:45 p.m. Game 2 is slated to start at 6:45 p.m.

The Sound (1-1) won its season opener Monday, 8-7 over the Barons.

Logan Campbell, who pitched for Highland High and Bakersfield College, allowed just one run on four hits in four innings, striking out eight.

"I was trying to attack the zone with my fastball and save my off-speed for later innings," said Campbell.

The Sound took a 3-1 lead in the fourth thanks to two walks, a run-scoring passed ball and a two-run home run by former Stockdale High and Bakersfield College outfielder Jordan Turner.

Bakersfield added to its lead with a run-scoring, ground-rule double by Forrest Smith that chased home former Liberty High standout Chris Neal.
