BC set to host state Final Four

California's community college baseball and softball champions will be determined this weekend at a pair of double-elimination tournaments at Bakersfield College.

The baseball tournament begins at noon today when Orange Coast faces Sierra College (25-15-1).

Today--Game 1: Riverside (33-13) vs. College of the Siskiyous (40-2), 5:30 p.m.; Game 2: Sierra (39-6) vs. Cypress (41-4), 8 p.m.

Baseball

Today--Game 1: Sierra (25-15-1) vs. Orange Coast (36-5-1), noon; Game 2: Rio Hondo (38-3) vs. Consumnes River (25-16), 6 p.m.

Orange Coast has been ranked No.1 in Southern California most of the season, while Sierra upset Northern California's top-ranked team, Feather River,, among others to advance to the Final Four.

That game is followed by Cosumnes River (25-16) from Sacramento facing Rio Hondo (38-3) from Whittier at 6 p.m. Rio Hondo, the No. 2 ranked team from Southern California, has won 33 straight games.

Those winners advance to the semifinals Saturday at 2 p.m. The Day 1 losers face off at 10 a.m. Saturday.

The team that wins both of its first two games advances into Sunday's finals at 11 a.m. There will be a loser's bracket game Saturday evening, 45 minutes after the 2 p.m. game ends, that will eliminate one team and advance the other to Sunday's finals.

The softball Final Four features two-time defending state champion Cypress (41-4), which opened the playoffs as the No. 2 seed from Southern California; Riverside (33-13), and Northern California powers College of the Siskiyous (40-2) and Sierra College (41-6) of Rocklin, near Sacramento.

Siskiyous, located in Weed, faces Riverside at 5:30 p.m. today, with Cypress meeting Sierra at 8 p.m. The winners advance to Saturday's 3 p.m. game with the losers meeting at 5:30 p.m.

The winner of the 5:30 p.m. game Saturday faces the loser of Saturday's 3 p.m. game. The 5:30 p.m. Saturday losing team is eliminated.

This is the second straight year BC has hosted the two tournaments.
