Taft's Gummersall named top female scholar athlete

Nicole Gummersall, a libero on the Taft College volleyball for the 2009 and 2010 seasons, has been named as the women's scholar athlete of the year by the California Community College Athletic Association.
Gummersall, an elementary education major from Utah, was Taft's most inspirational player and an All-Central Valley Academic selection. She had a 4.0 grade point average at Taft.
She will be honored on April 4 in San Mateo.
David Pennington of Bakersfield College was the men's scholar athlete of the year.
JC baseball
MONTEREY -- Taft College's Scott Koenen walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 14th inning to give the Cougars a 6-5 baseball win over Lassen College at Monterey Peninsula College.
Taft (3-4) had four walks and a sacrifice in the 14th.
Liberty High graduate Cole Bryant got the win, allowing one hit and striking out six in 41/3 innings.
Pierce Belaustegui had two doubles and Sean Arbout and Anthony Uran added two singles each for Taft.
Bakersfield College defeated Oxnard 7-4 at Gerry Collis Field in a game that ended after press time.
The Renegades, who improved to 7-1, are at home at 6:30 p.m. today against San Diego Mesa.
Softball
Sarah Smith hit a two-run home run in each game as Bakersfield College defeated Santiago Canyon 8-6 and West Hills 10-1 at BC.
The Renegades (6-4) rallied from a 5-0 deficit to beat Santiago Canyon before putting away West Hills in five innings.
Kara Frankhouser had two hits in the opener and added a two-run homer against West Hills.
BC will host Taft at 10 a.m. and Cuesta at 3 p.m. today.
Track and field
Bakersfield College had seven athletes place first in their respective events at a seven-team meet at Memorial Stadium.
The only double winner was Chris Schwartz, who won the men's 1,500 meters (3:58.98) and 3,000 (8:45.50).
Other men winners were Justin Evans in the 200 (22.64) and Davis Loustalot in the 800 (1:57.80).
The BC women winners were Tejera Dial in the 800 (2:25.26, barely ahead of teammate Elizabeth Sanchez's 2:25.58), Serraya Hermosilla in the 3,000 steeplechase (13:57l.87), Sarena Underwood in the pole vault (9-6) and Breann Goodman in the hammer (128-10).
Swimming
MONTEREY PARK -- The CSU Bakersfield men's team is in fourth place entering today's final day at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Swimming and Diving Championships held at East Los Angeles College.
On Friday, CSUB's Alex Daneke was second in the 100-yard backstroke (49.05) and third in the 200 freestyle (1:37.95).
Jake Priest was second in the 400 individual medley (3:53.12), Peter Bardessono was fourth in the 100 backstroke (49.38), Dan Wickensheimer was fourth in the 100 butterfly (48.23) and Brian Martinez was fifth in the 100 breaststroke (55.79).
Wickensheimer set a CSUB record in the 100 butterfly prelims with a 48.12.
CSUB has 332 points, 96 behind first-place UNLV.
The top performance for the CSUB women was a seventh place by Jordan Reed in the 1-meter diving event, which was held at Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. Reed scored 226.55 points.
Lily Donohue was 10th in the 100 back (57.49) and Rachel McCall was 10th in the 100 breast (1:04.00). Louise Westergren was 12th in the 100 fly (56.12).
