Liberty senior Cole Mazza will get his first taste of a national spotlight tonight when he suits up for the West team in the Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl at the Home Depot Center in Carson.
Mazza, rated the No. 1 long snapper in the country by several recruiting services, has verbally committed to Alabama, which plays in the national championship game Monday. He'll join many of the country's top high school players tonight in a 6 p.m. kickoff.
The game will be televised on NFL Network.
Big wrestling tourney starts today in Clovis
The annual Doc Buchanan Wrestling Invitational begins today at Clovis High School. It will feature many of California's top teams -- including the hosts, the two-time defending champions and top team in the state, plus out-of-state visitors from Nevada, Oregon, Colorado and Pennsylvania.
Three local wrestlers were given No. 2 seeds: Bakersfield's Coleman Hammond (145 pounds) and Kyle Pope (182) and Wasco's Isaiah Hokit (113).
The Drillers, ranked No. 4 in the state by The California Wrestler, also have No. 7 Hunter Hodges at 160 and No. 8 Bryce Martin at 170. Wasco also will send out No. 3 Sean Medley at 220 and No. 6 Garret Johnson at heavyweight.
Other local top-8 seeds: No. 4 Nick Marquez (120) of Foothill, No. 4 Vincent Gomez (126), No. 6 Kyle Shepherd (160) and No. 8 Josh Bailey (195) of Frontier.
Wrestling begins at 9 this morning and action will go through the quarterfinals tonight. The semifinals will be Saturday morning with the championship round scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
