FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- Former Colorado State and NFL standout Joey Porter, a Foothill graduate, will join the Rams' coaching staff this season as he finishes up his degree.
Colorado State football coach Jim McElwain said Wednesday that Porter will serve as an undergraduate student assistant coach. Porter was a star for the Rams and went on to play 13 seasons in the NFL, winning a Super Bowl title with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2005. He will be inducted into CSU's sports Hall of Fame in November.
McElwain, who attended the practice of the Denver Broncos on Wednesday, says of bringing Porter on board: "This is another example of reaching back into our past to help build our future at Colorado State."
Porter is working toward his liberal arts degree with a focus on social studies.
In April, Porter applied for the vacant Foothill coaching position, but the Trojans hired former Bakersfield High player and coach Jason Oliver.
Condors unveil new jerseys
The Bakersfield Condors unveiled two new jerseys designed by Reebok-CCM, to debut in the 2013-14 season. Joining the two sweaters will be the grey "B" jersey from last season which will be worn as an alternate sweater throughout the season.
The two new jerseys have a distinctive wing pattern on the sleeves.
For the first time since the 2004-05 season, the Condors will wear a different black jersey.
The jersey features the Condors primary logo as the crest, has a sublimated wing pattern in "Dazzle" metallic fabric down the sleeves, and under arm gusset Poly Mesh for ventilation. Other design elements include a Nickel Silver piping accenting a Harvard Red band around the bottom of the jersey. Inside the band, "BAKERSFIELD" is embroidered in Nickel Metallic. This jersey will be worn on the road for the first half of the season and at home for the second half.
The new white jersey replaces the style worn by the team since 2007-08 and features many of the same design elements as the new black jersey. Differences include the wing pattern on the shoulders, a different wing pattern on the sleeves, and the team's secondary bird logo as the crest. The wing designs are done in the sublimated "Dazzle" Metallic fabric and the bottom Harvard Red band has "BAKERSFIELD" embroidered in Nickel Metallic as well. These jerseys will be worn at home for the first half of the season and on the road for the second half.
The final jerseys are the result of a seven-month process through which dozens of jersey designs were considered and modified numerous times.
Huxhold swims to 21st place
IRVINE -- Cal State Bakersfield junior Mitchell Huxhold narrowly missed his second personal record in two days when he timed 3:57.69 in the men's 400 meters at the U.S. Open Swimming Championships.
Huxhold's PR is 3:57.54. He had a 3:58.02 in Wednesday's preliminaries. He set a PR in the 1,500 free on Tuesday.
CSUB coach Chris Hansen said two high school swimming standouts who had qualified for this meet, Stockdale senior Brock Bonetti and Frontier senior Jorie Caneta, have scratched and will focus on the U.S. Junior Nationals Aug. 5-9 at Irvine.
"This place is swarming with college coaches," Hansen said. "Some college coaches suggested it would be better for them to compete at a meet where they have a chance at doing very well."
The U.S. Open continues through Saturday.
