Local report: BC golf team 4th in WSC tourney

Carlos Fernandez shot an even-par 72 to tie for sixth and help Bakersfield College place fourth among eight teams Monday in a Western State Conference golf tournament at Santa Maria Country Club.

Sidney Wolf of College of the Canyons shot a 67 to win the tournament and lead the Cougars to a team title with 356 strokes.

Santa Barbara (378) was second, followed by Ventura (380) and BC (385).

Other BC scorers were: Paul Cooper (75), Jack Gilkey (79), Robert Chavez (79), Suraj Patel (80) and Jeremy Choi (80).

Jiu Jitsu seminar Saturday

Two-time Iraq war veteran and Brazilian jiu jitsu brown belt Fernando Arreola will lead a jiu jitsu seminar from 4-6 p.m. Saturday at Bakersfield MMA and Boxing, 1008 34th St.

Gladiator Challenge champion Justin Smitley and UFC fighter Michael McDonald also will participate in the seminar, which will be a fundraiser for Team Ferny Jiu Jitsu.

The Cost for the seminar is $15 for gym members and $25 for non-members.

Team Ferny Jiu Jitsu competitors range from ages 6-16 and have built an impressive record in out-of-town tournaments, and proceeds will help to pay for future trips.

The seminar will be open to the public.
