Local report: Aikenhead strong as CSUB beats Utah Valley

By THE BAKERSFIELD CALIFORNIAN

OREM, Utah -- Taylor Aikenhead pitched 7-2/3 solid innings to lead Cal State Bakersfield to a 10-4 Western Athletic Conference baseball win Friday.

Aikenhead (4-3) allowed only one run through seven innings before he was chased by a three-run Utah Valley rally in the eighth. Aikenhead struck out a career-best 11 and walked one.

Sergio Luna finished for CSUB and struck out three of the four batters he faced. The combined 14 strikeouts by Aikenhead and Luna set a CSUB single-game record.

CSUB (11-13, 4-3 WAC) had an 8-1 lead after seven innings.

Mylz Jones had two doubles and a single and Chance Gusbeth went 2-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs. Allen Gwynn and Garrett Pierce also had two hits apiece for Bakersfield.

Aikenhead allowed three earned runs in the eighth, the first earned runs he's allowed in 24-1/3 innings. Utah Valley's first run in the sixth was unearned.

The teams will play a doubleheader today starting at 2 p.m. because Sunday's game was postponed because of predicted snow in Orem.
