Local report: Roadrunners will play for title today in WAC tourney

PHOENIX -- Debora Araujo led Cal State Bakersfield with 21 kills Tuesday as the Roadrunners shook off a first-set loss to defeat Seattle, 26-28, 25-15, 25-15, 25-19, in the semifinals of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament at Grand Canyon University.

CSUB rallied to tie the match at 25 in the first set before the Redhawks closed it out. From that point, the 'Runners never trailed in advancing to their first conference championship game at the NCAA Division I level.

Araujo added 14 digs for her 13th double-double of the season. Kelsee Sawyer added 15 kills, Fernanda Gonçalves had 48 assists and Mariah Alvidrez added 20 digs for the Roadrunners.

It was CSUB's third win this season over Seattle.

Molly O'Hagan had seven kills for CSUB while Star Tucker Campbell added seven kills and a team-best four blocks. The Roadrunners will face top-seeded New Mexico State in today's tourney title match at 4 p.m. Pacific time. New Mexico State rallied past Idaho, 27-29, 26-24, 26-28, 25-12, 15-12, in the other semifinal Tuesday.

Taft women win in soccer playoffs

ROCKLIN -- Joanna Espinoza scored two goals to help Taft College move within one game of the state women's soccer tournament following a 2-1 victory over No. 2 Sierra College in the second round of the Northern California regionals.

It was the second straight victory over a higher seed for the Cougars (15-4-2), seeded 10th. Taft handed No. 7 Mendocino its first loss of the season in the opening round, a 4-2 victory.

The Cougars advance to play No. 3 seeded San Francisco City College at 2 p.m. Saturday. The winner reaches the state Final Four.

Espinoza, a Highland grad, scored her first goal just seven minutes into the match off a pass from Selina Chacon, and gave the Cougars a 2-0 lead 10 minutes later with her 28th goal of the season, assisted by former Bakersfield High standout Cristina Salazar.

BC beaten in volleyball playoffs

TORRANCE -- Bakersfield College's Edithza Urias totaled 11 kills, 10 digs and three aces, but the No. 11 seed Renegades were eliminated from the Southern California volleyball playoffs by No. 6 El Camino, 25-20, 18-25, 25-23, 25-16.

Tyler Herring added 11 kills, and Alyssa Mathews had 10 kills and 23 digs for BC (17-9). The Renegades also got 34 set assists from Kenadie Lee-McNeill, 17 digs and three aces from Maddie DeMarco, and 16 digs from Sarah Aurin.

The Warriors (21-4) recorded 91 digs, led by freshman and All-SCC First Team selection Darlene Lee with 29.

The Warriors will hit the road for their second round matchup after No. 3 Golden West dominated Chaffey 25-13, 25-12, 25-10 in the opening round.
