Cal State Bakersfield's baseball team added two local players Monday when Frontier seniors and friends Harrison Smith and Christian Deaton signed letters of intent to play for the Roadrunners.

"I've played with Harrison since we were 7 or 8 years old," Deaton said. "We've pretty much lived together. Being able to play at that high level with him, it's a great opportunity for both of us."

CSUB, a defending Western Athletic Conference co-champion, now has seven Bakersfield high school products on its roster.

"They've only had their program there for (six) years, and they had six guys drafted (into Major League Baseball) from it last year," Smith said. "They just have a really good program. They're strong, they're growing."

Smith and Deaton helped the Titans to a 20-10-1 record as juniors. Smith played second base and pitched; he batted .361 with 11 doubles and nine home runs, and was 2-1 with three saves and a 3.12 ERA on the mound.

"(CSUB is) talking about using me as a two-way guy, pitching and infield," Smith said.

"It's going to take some hard work and me pushing myself, but that's what I've been doing."

Deaton, an outfielder, batted .406 with 28 runs, three home runs and eight stolen bases.

Stockdale plays today in tennis regional

Six days after it won the Central Section Division I championship, Stockdale's girls tennis plays at home for the first time in CIF Southern California regional history.

The Mustangs (19-4) enter the regional, held for the first time last year, as the No. 6 seed. They host No. 11 Anaheim-Canyon in the first round at 2 p.m. today. Last year, Stockdale lost 7-0 on the road to eventual champion Dana Hills in the first round.
